Without sounding 'old fashioned', the 'oldies' were sooooo definately the best.
I kind of miss those days.....just been watching Auf Wedersen Pet - fantastic - Tbe Two Ronnie's and i am giggling hilariously!!! The same can be said for music i think - Elvis and Wham, Culture club/Boy George, Elton John, Michael Jackson, etc being just some fantastic examples.

Technology is better than back in the day and when you see the likes of new talent like Tokyo on Britain's got talent you realise music has come so far and in my opinion is getting better in many ways. The films are better and so realistic and TV is better. I like the change but I also love to listen to older music as it brings back memories but if you have to admit quiz programmes..documentaries..films and entertainment is better today than back in the 60's 70's or 80's  |

Really? I dont like reality but there are dramas, documentaries, wildlife .. david attenborough programmes that have the most amazing technology that show a bird in flight .. you wouldnt have seen anything as good as you do now back in the 80's.
TV is far better now, you just have to be choosey about what you watch if you want proper entertainment. |

I don't think they were the best, nostalgia does funny things to your brain, the things you remember were always the biggest, brightest, funniest things going, and some things have stood the test of time, however now we have some of the best factual programmes ever and technology is to thank for that, also the tv series are way better than anything that was on years ago, gripping and realistic. |

I wish that they would repeat some of the classics.
They do some, but I would love to see Bread and The Young ones again as two examples.

I'm surprised they haven't re-run Bread again. Some great characters in that, our Joey!
In terms of American shows, I also loved 'Love Boat' and 'Moonlighting', with early performances from Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd. I was about 6 when both of these shows these aired but I remember them vividly.

I was referring to tv/music etc not the political situation during the mentioned time period if you read my post correctly.
However, if you want to create an argument, which you seem to be seeking.....
I'll give you a little food for thought....
The situation with the former USSR may have calmed, but they remain very much a threat as do North Korea.
A far greater and REAL threat are ISIS and other REAL terrorist organisations and Syria/Libia/Iran etc.....
I believe that the threats of terrorism today are far greater than any threat from the former USSR back in the day. This is made pretty clear from the horrendous recent events.
Whilst AIDS was perceived as a threat then, clear guidance was given on how to avoid it.
The level of poverty faced by sone People in the UK today, immigration, the austerity cuts and the state of the NHS and Education system is far more/equally as dire as the Miners strike was in the 70's.
Times were devastatingly hard those days; but at least the community pulled together and People actually cared back then. |

Only 35 - not actually born until 1980/81 so just a mere thought during a lot of the events he claims to know so much about!!! At least I was actually on the Earth during the 70's!!

The sampling bias in this thread is driving me nuts.
Comparing modern music, film and television to an indeterminate time in the past is incredibly flawed. There have been mentions of 60's, 70's, 80's and even 90's culture, so of course there's going to be better examples when you have a 40 year sample pool.
That being said, we're currently in the golden age of television (maybe last 10-12 years). Better TV shows go unnoticed than some of the stuff that was on terrestrial television even just few years ago. |

I have to massively disagree that if Elvis had not been so successful, it would have been another artist.

He influenced and shaped the music industry and had an impact on it that no other musician ever had.
You may say that he copied songs - well I am afraid that you are Mis-informed.
No Elvis did not write his own music, I think that he was talented enough, but do you hwve any perception whatsoever of how many artists have copied his music since?? I thought not.
In addition, my final comment is how many artists can you truly say are recognised and honoured to the extent that he is 40 years after their death.....61 years from the start of their massive career.

I tend to agree with you on a lot of the oldies.
I do know quite a few people artist that have borrowed from him F.Y.C and The Petshop boys to name two.

Some things are better, some worse, some things stay the same. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.
Motown was manufactured music. It had a house band, house writers, house producers, a house sound and a svengali owner telling a stable of acts what to sing and when. In the 80s, Stock, Aitken and Waterman did the same thing. Simon Cowell is the Berry Gordy of this century and every generation will eventually look back at its childhood with fondness.
That ad with the guy talking in rhyme about being an embarrassing dad and saying everything really is better now after arguing with his kid about it should just quit facetiming and fuck off to New Zealand.
We're living longer thanks to technology but we've also beome so reliant on it that our existence is threatened by a growing resistance to antibiotics.
We weren't happier in the old days but we weren't sadder either. One thing we know from the data is that we were more intelligent, so all those young people thinking old people are just stupid should get a clue. |
