Well for a start, will we all be still buying/downloading today's music 30/40 years from now???
I very much doubt it..... however, the likes of Elvis, C/Club, Elton John and other acts popular during the 60's, 70's, 80's are so VERY present and still popular sooooo many years later. The fact that you even know these artists speaks volumes of their popularity |

That is ridiculous - just because i have some CULTURE and TASTE does not mean that i have not moved on.

Technology is better than back in the day and when you see the likes of new talent like Tokyo on Britain's got talent you realise music has come so far and in my opinion is getting better in many ways. The films are better and so realistic and TV is better. I like the change but I also love to listen to older music as it brings back memories but if you have to admit quiz programmes..documentaries..films and entertainment is better today than back in the 60's 70's or 80's |

Really? I dont like reality but there are dramas, documentaries, wildlife .. david attenborough programmes that have the most amazing technology that show a bird in flight .. you wouldnt have seen anything as good as you do now back in the 80's.
TV is far better now, you just have to be choosey about what you watch if you want proper entertainment. |

I don't think they were the best, nostalgia does funny things to your brain, the things you remember were always the biggest, brightest, funniest things going, and some things have stood the test of time, however now we have some of the best factual programmes ever and technology is to thank for that, also the tv series are way better than anything that was on years ago, gripping and realistic. |

If we restrict the answer to music and film, without a shadow of doubt, today's celebs are talentless in comparison to those who were popular a generation ago.

I'm surprised they haven't re-run Bread again. Some great characters in that, our Joey!
In terms of American shows, I also loved 'Love Boat' and 'Moonlighting', with early performances from Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd. I was about 6 when both of these shows these aired but I remember them vividly.
What a bloody weird kid I was! |

I was referring to tv/music etc not the political situation during the mentioned time period if you read my post correctly.
However, if you want to create an argument, which you seem to be seeking.....
I'll give you a little food for thought....
The situation with the former USSR may have calmed, but they remain very much a threat as do North Korea.
A far greater and REAL threat are ISIS and other REAL terrorist organisations and Syria/Libia/Iran etc.....
I believe that the threats of terrorism today are far greater than any threat from the former USSR back in the day. This is made pretty clear from the horrendous recent events.
Whilst AIDS was perceived as a threat then, clear guidance was given on how to avoid it.
The level of poverty faced by sone People in the UK today, immigration, the austerity cuts and the state of the NHS and Education system is far more/equally as dire as the Miners strike was in the 70's.
Times were devastatingly hard those days; but at least the community pulled together and People actually cared back then. |

That is exactly what I am saying. People don't even know their neighbours names in many cases. Let alone the person who lives down the road. The mining communities were extremely tight-knit communities who helped one another during those times. They made food parcels or dinners for those involved in the strikes, they looked after one-another's children etc.
The children could play out all day and be 'safe'. Now you can't let your young one's out of your sight.
So yes I am implying exactly that - When was the last time you checked on an elderly neighbour, asked if he/she needed help or a pint of milk/some Bread?
I rest my case. It's you that should be embarrassed.
Spouting crap about something that you know zero about. |

"3 million unemployed, miners strike , falklands war, Everyone shitting it thinking USSR would nuke us any moment, AIDS, Famine, Dirty trains, IRA bombings.
Just a exsample of the good ol days.
Did you actually just say that at least people actually cared back then imply they don't now.?
Did you actually say that?...
I'm actually embarrassed for you now a little.
Good night.
Spouting crap about something that you know zero about."
Not to mention going off on a totally different tangent to what my original post was actually about.
Everyone else on this thread has commented about the actual topic that the post was about.
All except you.....and I should be embarrassed why??? |

I kind of miss those days.....just been watching Auf Wedersen Pet - fantastic - Tbe Two Ronnie's and i am giggling hilariously!!! The same can be said for music i think - Elvis and Wham, Culture club/Boy George, Elton John, Michael Jackson, etc being just some fantastic examples.
Who agree's?? "
Definitely, I'm stuck in the 80's musically and film wise. Rose tinted glasses on for sure. |

Yeah, but nostalgia isn't as good as it used to be
Problem is OP you are selecting a few good things from multiple decades, time has filtered out all the crap from those days. For every great tune or TV show you remember and enjoy today there are 50 you have thankfully forgotten. |

1.54mln unemployment now - officially. Surely more if you add those who are under the radar. Or on virtual unemployment, 0 hours contracts etc.
This figure will only increase as Brexshit starts to bite.
The world has never been more unstable since WW2 than now.
Why did you believe the false propaganda about USSR?
But the terrorists acts are now real.
We eat food made in laboratories.
Water, air, soil, noise pollution everywhere. We wonder why there are so many sick people.
My grandfather still rides his bicycle at the age of 94...Try to beat that...
Cancer was 1 in a 1000. What's now - seems more like 2 out of 7...
Has AIDS gone nowadays? Seeing so many bareback kamikazes one would think so. Or perhaps those people have the knowledge from before Aids was discovered.
Chronic stress. Did they know what that was a generation or 2 ago?
Politicians lie more than ever! Basterds. |

"3 million unemployed, miners strike , falklands war, Everyone shitting it thinking USSR would nuke us any moment, AIDS, Famine, Dirty trains, IRA bombings.
Just a exsample of the good ol days.
Did you actually just say that at least people actually cared back then imply they don't now.?
Did you actually say that?...
I'm actually embarrassed for you now a little.
Good night.
LMAO you really are cluthing at straws now.
I know my neighbours names i also see children running up and down my street unruly just like we did back in the ' good ol days '..
I'm not sure where you live but it don't sound like the street/place i live in 2017 more like a hell hole where you have to listen to - do you really wanna hurt me on a loop.
You are the sad one making judgements that are false that you know nothing about. I suggest you go and get some anger management classes mate cos you are no doubt not successful on here with your attitude.
You didn't seem to want to answer my question regarding helping your neighbours strangely enough....
Deluded comes to mind
Some of us live in the REAL world
85 replies on this thread and yours is the only one gone off on some deluded tangent. Lol.
Goodnight
Pleased I kept it real.
Night OP and see you in 2017 tomorrow ok.
Hang in there stay strong in the awful shit world it is now ok.
Only 35 - not actually born until 1980/81 so just a mere thought during a lot of the events he claims to know so much about!!! At least I was actually on the Earth during the 70's!!
In fact, I actually grew up in a valley's community during the Miners strike so I clearly have some experience and knowledge........my Grandfather and uncles were miners......and your views are based on what experiences exactly??? I would be soooooo enlightened to know!!!
35 and thinks he knows everything.......ohhh dear. So arrogant.
Nothing wrong with expressing different views. No need to become agitated. "
The loser is now blocked..... problem solved!! Can't stand arrogant people who hyjack threads lol!!! |

The statistics speak for themselves and require no m argument or further discussion.
Elvis to date has sold well over a billion records worldwide.
He also remains the biggest selling male solo artist. Yes 40 years (In August) after his death.
I have to massively disagree that if Elvis had not been so successful, it would have been another artist.
That assumption is frankly ludicrous.
There was/is no-one with the talent, charisma, presence that Elvis had....not within a million miles
He influenced and shaped the music industry and had an impact on it that no other musician ever had.
You may say that he copied songs - well I am afraid that you are Mis-informed.
No Elvis did not write his own music, I think that he was talented enough, but do you hwve any perception whatsoever of how many artists have copied his music since?? I thought not.
In addition, my final comment is how many artists can you truly say are recognised and honoured to the extent that he is 40 years after their death.....61 years from the start of their massive career.
To be frank I think that you are deluded and misinformed or simply jealous!!! |

Yes thank you!
If we are to believe the Elvis hater ...look how many people copy that iconic Tom Jones look, well he came through the ranks at the same time. He wasn't half bad looking, gyrated a bit, wrote his own songs, amazing voice...not a patch on the sheer reach of Elvis though, because he had something else -

The sampling bias in this thread is driving me nuts.
Comparing modern music, film and television to an indeterminate time in the past is incredibly flawed. There have been mentions of 60's, 70's, 80's and even 90's culture, so of course there's going to be better examples when you have a 40 year sample pool.
That being said, we're currently in the golden age of television (maybe last 10-12 years). Better TV shows go unnoticed than some of the stuff that was on terrestrial television even just few years ago. |

I say this even having watched Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, the Two Ronnies and Allo Allo.
If a show like The Americans can go unwatched, then you know that you're in the golden age of television. |

Some things are better, some worse, some things stay the same. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.
Motown was manufactured music. It had a house band, house writers, house producers, a house sound and a svengali owner telling a stable of acts what to sing and when. In the 80s, Stock, Aitken and Waterman did the same thing. Simon Cowell is the Berry Gordy of this century and every generation will eventually look back at its childhood with fondness.
That ad with the guy talking in rhyme about being an embarrassing dad and saying everything really is better now after arguing with his kid about it should just quit facetiming and fuck off to New Zealand.
We're living longer thanks to technology but we've also beome so reliant on it that our existence is threatened by a growing resistance to antibiotics.
We weren't happier in the old days but we weren't sadder either. One thing we know from the data is that we were more intelligent, so all those young people thinking old people are just stupid should get a clue. |

I'm neither deluded, misinformed or jealous. I have an opinion on him as I did research on him for a music history paper.
I tend to agree with you on a lot of the oldies.
I do know quite a few people artist that have borrowed from him F.Y.C and The Petshop boys to name two.
You can have opinions all you like but you can't argue with stats, which is what myself and the OP are saying.
I was never arguing over the stats. But personally I couldn't be a follower of someone who liked "young girls" or someone who impersonated police officers regularly."
