Why do so many people on here appear to be illiterate, especially when your browser will highlight your mistakes so you can correct them...

The lack of grammar understanding, and inability to spell even the simplest of words is quite staggering.

It's just laziness, surely?

Why does it bother you? It must be easier to by pass these profiles than to get all ranty about it. Surely people can do whatever they like with their profiles?

Yes. It's laziness. I openly admit it. But I think those that get uptight about it to the point they shout out and rant on forums, must be furious about much bigger issues in life.

For some it may be laziness; some won't care that they aren't using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; some may not have a clue about spellcheck.

I admit I'm a bit of a grammar nazi, and in everyday life can't abhor bad spelling. But on here everyone has their own challenges and spellcheck isn't infallible. The word could well be spelt right just not in the correct context. Much more worrying things than some misspellings to concern myself about. X

I've often had to completely restructure a sentence cos the spellchecker hasn't given me the word that looks the most right to me! That causes me embarrassment. So now as I feel I am amongst friends having been here 4 years. I don't worry as much about the odd word that I fail to spell correctly. Untill someone like you comes along and causes me to be upset/embarrassed.

Hi

I can often tell if a person is dyslexic or if grammar and spelling are not part of their skill set ..... or perhaps they are relaxed (lazy in your opinion) with the tool they are using for a certain situation of communication.

Spelled porly on purpose ....

On my apple phone "poorly" was not highlighted in anyway - it's only if i think it might be wrong ....I hit it - then it highlights and offers a selection of alternatives however as a person who has severe dyslexic - I then need to choose the right spelling which I might not know so then it's a guess which might LOOK right yet distresses me.

Normally I would not say this - I have an extremely high IQ and severely dyslexic - so it takes me three times more the average time to read or construct written sentences.

So I use txt speech a good deal of the time with "ur" and short forms and symbols and pics ...and I'm relaxed as long as my message gets across ..... if I'm writing a report as a consultant or a white paper - every bit of the work is accurate in it's written delivery.

It's situational for me ...

I agree OP. I cannot understand some messages and its really very irritating. I sometimes have to ask several times what they mean in the conversation.

We can choose not to reply or to try and understand. I give the benefit of the doubt to words which are clearly typo's but for someone who cannot be bothered to string a sentence along I have no time for and I will never understand what they mean.

For what it's worth I post on my phone a lot, I've just tried it and no I don't get a red line under incorrectly spelt words. So not everyone will get the benefit of spell check. My phone tends to default to the correct spelling if I've got one letter totally wrong, other times it has no clue what I'm on about and accepts what I have managed to input. Other times it changes words completely, "the" keeps becoming "tree" because of the swipe input method I use.

Is it laziness that I don't use the preview option and reread the entire post, yes I guess it is. However I hopefully manage to keep spelling and grammar in check and if the odd auto carrot fail creeps in I'm not that concerned. If that's a deal breaker for some people then hey ho.

There are people though who genuinely struggle with it and as long as I can make head or tail of it that's ok, I'm not grading them on their writing skills. What I struggle with is people who use excessive amounts of text speak, no punctuation or paragraphs and then send something unintelligible.

Maybe it's because they are here to enjoy the lifestyle and they're not too bothered about the odd grammatical error. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not 100% with my spelling and grammar, my job luckily doesn't require me to be and I make a very good living.

I don't use spell check or big words because I'm not anal about those type of things. I'm not thick by a long shot nor am I dyslexic.

I just plain don't care.

But surely there are some people on here have difficulties spelling... I wouldn't say lazy no...I wonder is this how you judge people op.. only on their spelling alone? (Yes spelling error included)

I like to spell correctly but it certainly wouldn't put me off conversing with someone that couldn't.

In work I'm particular about spelling on official correspondence and reports. There's a need to portray a professional image and ensure that the grammar, facilitates clear English and avoids ambiguity.

But hey, many of us here use smart phones with fiddly screens, some people's literacy skills are varied and in the long and short of it, if I can understand what they write I'm happy to converse.

Would you not talk to someone who's vocabulary wasn't that creative? Just take people for who they are?

Well I guess the exact definition of illiterate, is someone who's unable to read or write ? It's more a case of levels and ability.

Spell check offers suggestions yes, but with various suggestions it can misguide?

Quite obviously some folks literacy is better than others. Perhaps they don't place importance on it?

To be fair a lot of people access their stuff on the move on phones now and sometimes spellcheck can be notorious for changing things against your will as you're typing on the move.

The world was a better place without spellcheck to be honest - it's made us lazy and no willing to spend the time to double check that the message has come across

I think the questions are valid, however your use of the questions were invalid as actual questions.Firstly you said that some 'appeared illiterate', when in fact they just possibly have bad spelling, however its a pretty negative way to say a bad speller is illiterate, in itself that makes no sense. Secondly you asked if its 'just laziness, surely?', this was not really a question either, the intent was to get agreements from us.

Sometimes being great at English whether written or spoken can mean fuck all if its not expressed properly, in turn it ends up that the initial superiority of the tone just leads others to think that you were never really ever asking any questions.

OK, it was badly put together, and perhaps a little inflammatory, but the point still stands.

It has nothing, in this instance, to do with people that are dyslexic- that's a different talking point. The question has been answered anyway - people don't give a damn.

of course the point still stands...another great thing to do when possibly typing into the forum something you find as a 'new' subject, is the search box. Maybe you were just too lazy, surely?(see what I did there)

why surely?

many more people have dyslexia than are lazy

Dyslexia and an inability to use spellcheck?"

I'm dyslexic. Spellchecker doesn't help because it often gives choices and because I'm dyslexic I have no idea which is the correct choice. It's not me being lazy at all.

However if someone doesn't want to meet me/read my comments/wants to be critical of me because I can't spell it's no big deal to me

As far as your OP goes? The corrections don't appear on all browsers and in all honesty I don't think it's a thing of concern for many. As long as their writing can be understood, that's all they care about.

Maybe you were just too lazy, surely?(see what I did there)

and of course you would have seen how many many many of the grammar posts often start so badly, that the OP ends up having to defend/agree/backtrack on their subject."

Oh I stand entirely by the original question - albeit that it might have been better worded more softly.

If people that come on here (the forum) don't care about the way people converse, then I have no interest in them anyway. With that in mind I haven't lost anything, and have in fact had the question inadvertently answered.

"I didn't intend to sneer. If it came across that way, it wasn't my intention. The question was a genuine one.

But I think that's sadly what's caused the some what negative response you've received. Intention on here can only really be interpreted by language used unless clearly expressed.

As far as your OP goes? The corrections don't appear on all browsers and in all honesty I don't think it's a thing of concern for many. As long as their writing can be understood, that's all they care about. "

Agreed. There is a percentage of people on here that do think it matter though - in fact it's the very first thing they look for.

"Why do so many people on here appear to be illiterate, especially when your browser will highlight your mistakes so you can correct them...

The lack of grammar understanding, and inability to spell even the simplest of words is quite staggering.

It's just laziness, surely?

You know what though, I would hate for someone to want to fuck me because I can spell reasonably well, and use punctuation.

Just my opinion but you've just lowered your chances of a meet by starting this thread!

There is many reasons why some people struggle with grammar, spelling and or punctuation, mine and most people's heads aren't so far up they're own arse to realise that it's not just laziness ......... the majority are on here for fun not to bitch about whether someone has bothered to spell check a post or message!!

You'll absolutely have to do thorough research op, before making claims that you are able to substantiate.

Forum rules do not state that posts have to be to any standards set by whimsical pedants. All are welcome here, including those with support needs - this is an inclusive site.

The ability to construct a reasonable message can be used as a filter and generally gets a reply.

how ru? Delete delete

Even if that was spelt correctly I would delete that message.

I use people's poor spelling as a filter. If i don't have a clue what they are trying to say as it's so badly spelt then I'm not interested. And yes it is uneducated people who do it. I'm not looking for Times level perfection but something with some relation to the English language at least.

At least two of my regular chat friends on here ard dyslexic and its not a problem for them.

firefox doesn't have an auto check, you need to download one.

all they have is an american spell check anyway so some words, that are spelt correctly in english are actually highlighted as spelt wrong.

this spell check thinks spelt is not a word either, as an example. yet google that word, it exists in english.

I find it highly amusing that the folk who claim to use spelling as a filter, might need to spellcheck their own profiles before criticising others.

Spellcheck only works if you know how to spell it!! trust me! If your dyslexic or have any spelling issues, how you feel the word is spelt and sometimes spellcheck hasn't got a clue what you mean but you do lol. The end of the day, know matter how we speak or spell, we are all humans built in different ways and deal with everything differently, that's why we are so special in our own way xx

So a hot female drops you a message with poor spelling , you delete and block her , why because she is lazy .

Spelling doesn't bother me much but some people do need to take the time read over messages to make sure that bad punctuation and grammar hasn't changed the meaning.

You're welcome to your views. There are a LOT of people on the Internet that feel the same way as I do."

I agree to an extent and I am put off by lazy people who won't take the time to read what they are posting to me.I can forgive typos though and if someone told me they were dyslexic of course it wouldn't bother me
