So, it's come to that point in our house where we have decided to buy a new TV, bear in mind there's nothing wrong with the one we have, which was purchased back in 2001, it's a Panasonic 32" flatscreen CRT screen, now if you remember back then they were fecking huge, I've never really looked at tellys until last night, so we went in to our local currys, and was so blinded by the technology of these new things we just thought, feck it let's go, cannot be arsed with all this, specially when the sales assistant is blinding you with the spec of the thing.

Ever been overwhelmed so much with information and thought sod this, can't be arsed?

I was always a tech geek so did my research... now I'm just so over it all... I ask my son for advise and go with it... I haven't got the interest anymore

Yes I find tech stuff REALLY boring.

I need a new laptop - but it's all a bit overwhelming.

Buying things online is the way forward.

Have a look at what specifications you want / need.

Then order it to avoid the sales assistants blurb

I hate electrical stores, I find the staff just script reading technical specs. They have even less of a clue what they're talking about than I do. I prefer to pick a model I like the look of and research via reviews from all over the Internet, then make my decision, and buy online.

Just splash out on a digit digihome tv...I paid about £190 for a 43" smart tv over 2 years ago and it's perfect.

Very much so!

To be honest, some supermarkets have great deals on TV's there was a 50something inch Panasonic in Asda recently for about £400 so what it wasn't 4K with 18 hdmi inputs and internet connectivity.

It's a well known sales technique, throw lots of confusing stuff out there and then say something simple, punters will be very attracted to the simple thing because it makes the confusion go away.

"... the extra compact CPU with twin dual override features helps the PSU with the picture stability algorithm. Or for £500 plus vat you can have it delivered next week, is Saturday good for you?"

If the even simpler answer is "get fucked, most TV is still crap, I can see the shop exit from here" then the customer is lost.

Great bargain at Tesco. Hisense 4K 42inch flat screen smart for £320. Ideal for a first or second tv, put one in our kitchen.

No. I like to do my research for anything like this. So it'd be a couple of weeks before I even entered the shop and by then I'd already pretty much know what I was looking for so I wouldn't be relying on the sales assistant.

I don't mind it. It's like buying a pc/laptop. You wouldn't buy one without knowing if the processor is fit or hard drive is suitable. I don't geek out on on TV's but if I am spending £400+ on something I want to know what I am buying and that it's not 4 year old stock they are flogging on at rrp.

My tv is on it's last legs I'm slowly losing the picture. I'm putting off buying a new one as I haven't a clue what's a reasonable one to get and I know if I go into a store I'll be bombarded with specs by sales staff

Set your budget, check out sites that offer top 10 listings for budgets. Pick something you like and do your own research. Reviews on tech sites are usually pretty much on the mark. Their staff are full on tech weenies and know their shit.

Technology is so good these days its much of a muchness really...

Bought a bush 50inch smart TV for £200 and I have to say its a much better TV than an expensive Sony one I bought 7 years ago!

I use to be a techie geek and still am but its very small gains now.... Specially with tvs.

Try finding a decent large non-smart tv...bet you'll struggle. That's why I'm sticking to the one I've had for over 10 years

Well that's the thing really,I haven't a clue how much a reasonable fairly decent tv would generally cost. I would need them to set it up for me as I'm terrible with thing's like that,so would need to buy from a shop I think.

I'll do that thought thankyou after my summer hol's,fingers crossed it holds out til then

Just do not put in the WiFi password, then it's not smart.

I do my research, have a look at reviews, speak to some friends then make my choice (usually from a few manufacturers that I have had stuff from before so I know what they'll be like)

Then order from somewhere like Amazon so they deliver it

110% this! Cant stand pressure selling from ill informed people who have targets to meet! Went in Currys once and they was like vultures on me. I left and bought online for the exact same price.

As for laptops, just buy Apple its easy and straight forward. My last Macbook lasted me 9 years. Thats 7 more than my works laptop lasts on average.

Okay, but my TV is already 1080p, so to upgrade I'd go for a 4k one. I dont have anything that outputs 4k, so not much point yet, and all 4k have smart crap.

Also equipment now has a very short use life. Things aren't built like they use to be

The op was talking about updating from a big heavy small screen crt tv.

I think he can get a good larger screen tv for under £200.

Then you go on about smart tvs.....then when I said don't complicate things you at to the frame about 4k tvs

They are out there and I've seen them for under £300....but it's complicated as you said you can get bugger all in 4k at the moment.

So let's keep this uncomplicated eh!

That's what the poor bugger got in currys

I paid £120 for a bog standard flat screen from Currys. If you don't hanker for a big brand TV there's plenty of choice.

How much as you looking to spend?

What format are the films in? (MP4, MKV, etc)

Do you want just wifi on it or a SIM card?

Never buy a tv from Currys.

You won't find better than the new Samsung range.

Find the model you want then order from John Lewis and you will get a free 5 year guarantee.

We buy lots (2 or 3 per month) and if there has ever been an issue they have always been excellent.

4K will be a fad just like the 3D range but if it's at a good price it's worth the little extra.

Amazon Prime have a lot that is filmed in 8K and the quality on a standard 1080P internet TV is spot on.

The new wallpaper TV's will come down in price too.
