i've been getting my head around being able to play obscure musical time signatures ... especially really technical stuff where the time signature changes from measure to measure ... now i know i probably know i sound like i'm talking in code to most folks but is anyone else a fan of listening to or playing math rock?
here's an example by the band Hella ...

I'm a Tool fan so I get what you're on about. Weird rhythms and time signatures really do it for me.
I'm trying to do similar stuff with the bass at the moment but I'm going jazz!
Check out some Snarky Puppy if you can handle it. Lots of poly-rhythms. They've really improved my playing...

Neither rock nor jazz, but here's possibly my all time favourite song. Harry Nilsson is great at playing around with timings...

they're nice bits .... the jazz thing is pretty strong with both those tracks, but in different genres. tool have some good timings going on. there's the clever mainstream stuff like radiohead, dave brubeck and even floyd's money.
i think the bridge part of the beatles here comes the sun got me thinking more about it when i tried to figure out the structure of the tune ... took me ages to suss out that it was 11/8, 4/4, 7/8

Currently listening to their first album; masterpiece!
OP. Have you tried Dillinger Escape Plan? Or perhaps The Locust? |

I am more of a deathgrind girl but I wouldn't mind a bit of mathcore. Screamo style vocals and crazy guitar techniques might not be for everyone but Psyopus is my favourite band. |

I prefer the grungier, doomy slowcore post rock type stuff to actual math rock. Floor, Jawbox etc. Weird time signatures where you have to feel the pulse of the riff rather than the beat. Like this. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lvykduwiNCs |

And there's always King Crimson to fall back on...
As Bill Bruford said:
"Because it's the only gig where you can play in 13/8 time and still get a decent hotel room afterwards." |

"Money .. pink Floyd "
.... yep, i mentioned that earlier in the thread even though the time signature isn't really a very complicated one ....
outcast - hey ya
is pretty tricky mind ... especially seeing as how it's by a bunch of rappers who don't usually play instruments |
