I can picture them now ringing up their colleagues to get the latest on Oslo, Winehouse, Fifa etc and halfway through dialling they realise there's no deadline to meet cos there's no paper to get out lol |

That's a shame because I heard they did some great sports coverage and some people bought the NoTW every week just for that! "
I didn't buy a paper last Sunday as it would have felt like going to see City when it should have been United. Can't see me ever buying another Sunday newspaper again as I've read most of the other mainstream ones in the past and I just don't like them. |

It would be incredibly naive to believe that the Murdochs won't launch another Sunday tabloid, and even more naive to believe it won't be a Sunday version of the biggest selling daily in the UK.
I'll buy a Sunday Sun, no problem with that at all.
But, hey, the Murdochs are today's whipping boy. It shouldn't be too long now before another 'scandal' breaks and a new personality to hate will be splurged across our screens, how fickle are the the baying public for this type of gluttonous Marathon Man-esque type of frenzies. |

Those are your words, not mine, please don't credit me with things I haven't said.
All I am saying is that whether you like it or not, the Murdochs are major players in the world of media and print and to believe they won't come back with another Sunday tabloid is really quite naive. It would be like Ford deciding not to make any new cars for a year because someone crashed one. |

well tbh with laws being planned disallowing ownership of more than one form of media,i dont think they will unless they decide to give up the Times and interests in bskyb, the cash cow is and what they really want is bskyb,i dont think they will put a foot wrong to alienate the public and will come back in for it having sold the sun and Times.
In your earlier post you seemed to be critiqueing the public revulsion of the milly dowler and other hacking cases describing it as "Fickle"
There was nothing fickle about the public revulsion, hence the murdochs described it as a "firestorm" and sat before the select committee with the teeth of public opinion at their throats.
It was and is great to see the British people saying enough is enough and giving a corporation a knee in the bollocks, for me, we should do it more often.

I like the tabloid football reports, and really only bought the Sunday papers during the football season.
Looks like making do with Sunday Mirror and People this season |

"I only miss NOTW for the sports coverage, the sports columnists and reporters were the best. "
Presumably the journalists, the authors of such aticles will appear elsewhere? With the same style of content? |

The football reporting in the NOTW was more of a team effort with the collective resources and contacts of them all that made their sports coverage so excellent. Unless the whole team move en masse to another paper I can't see the NOTW sports reporting ever being repeasted elsewhere. |

"Under EU competition laws it would not be legal to stop individuals or companies from owning more than one form of media......so that one is well and truly kicked into touch."
i dont think it can or would be used as its meant to control monopolies and undue advantage through size and market dominance , if you think about it,its why the last final decision was left to the media and cultural minister.
The problem for them was one of public opinion Vs EU approval of the deal.
The EU would not dare stand in the way of limiting EU local law tightening plurality, their own PR interests would suffer,if they were seen to protect multinational mis-governance.
This story will keep rolling out shocks globally for another year yet..dispatches on wednesday on channel 4 will be interesting where they out murdochs backroom influence on British politics. |

One of the reasons Murdoch closed the NOTW so quickly was because of the question of plurality. He knew he'd never gain control of BSkyB if he continued to own the four biggest papers in the UK. One of them would have had to go and this presented the perfect opportunity to do it. The backlash however meant his bid for Sky was scuppered too. He'll try again but he's not allowed to for 6 months under City regs. |

Where's the news in that PD. As you've said elsewhere, Old Etonian Blair hijacked the Labour party and socialist vote. Wasn't it The Sun that swept him to power in '97?
The man who would be President. lol.

There are lots of freelance reporters that work on more than one newspaper. They will keep themselves in work. The quality of the printed reports or rather the presentation is down to the Sports Editor. They too will get snapped up |

Actually, I usually forget which sites links are permitted to. It would be helpful if the links page is 'stickied' somewhere on the forums.
Thanks anyway. xx |
