I have to renew my photo card drivers licence and the DVLA say its only to update the photo. I can do it online if I give them permission to use my passport photo, it'll cost me £20 for the priviledge.
The photo on my passport is from the same batch of four as the one on my licence so who's pulling who's leg here? |

Thats a fine point and I am seriously writing to my MP about it. I think its scandalous having to pay to renew licences. |

I'm stillusing my paper licence that I've had for last 30 odd yrs. I have no plans to update it as it doesn't run out for about another 20yrs.
Can't remember what it cost, but the photo card licences have to be updated every 10yrs and they aint going to get cheaper either. |

They're meanlingless as a license as I found out from the police one time, the paper license is the important part not the photo ID
Just another rip off

I agree if you got your licence at 17 and need to change it at 27 for the facial change reason but apart from hairstyles etc I think most peoples features stay recognisable for decades. |

I dont mind initial fees its the non necessary renew fees and silly expiry dates on things that cannot expire like the skills you've gained and exams you passed and jobs you held down without all this new certification... |

They DO send out a reminder by post.
Which reminds me - that's a sneaky way to get a free update. Tell the DVLA about moving house and they give you a new license. It'll still have the same expiry date though, sadly. That's how I updated form an old paper one that fell apart. |

Yes I am the same, still have the paper licence from when I passed in 1988, mind you it looks like it's been through the wash a couple of times! |

Unfortunately without an 'in date' licence you will not be legally licenced to drive. Your photo card does stipulate what categories you are licenced for. It also displays when the expiry date is.
Much as your counterpart displays any penalties or endorsements (that you may have accumulated) your photo card is equally as important and must be renewed at the appropriate time.
If you do not have a valid licence then equally you are not legally insured to drive.

Another D.V.L.A. Rip Off - is trying to make you pay to get points removed from your licence.. !!!
as a poster said earlier you change address to your mums for example - then they send you the same dated licence but minus any spent convictions or points etc etc...
beats paying - to get your speeding tickets removed from your paper part
and didnt you already pay enuf when u got the speeding ticket in the bloody first place ....
please dont follow any of my advice as i wont be held responsible for anyone saying to the dvla that they moved back in with mummy for a few months !! ok x |

friend of mine got fined for not paying road tax even though his bike was broken down and off the road in the garage. When he wrote and explained they said he still had to pay the fine as he was legally obliged to inform them that it was "off the road" and he didn't. |

Another who has a copy of the Magna Carta folded up in my wallet! It`s always a moment of much mirth when we have to produce them at work! The only thing that does spoil having a paper one though is that they are not valid in Europe, apparently. |

You better hope they don't fine you the £1000 for not renewing it in time then!
OMG dont tell me that "
Sorry, but it is an offence if you don't surrender it for renewal before the expiry date on it |

This is a recent change in the law. If it`s off the road for any reason, cancell everything and inform the DVLA straight away! |

Its a legal requirement to notify DVLA of a change of address. If you don't there is a fine of £1000. When you send in the paper licence you have to send in a passport photo so you'll get a photo licence even if you dont want one.
So they get you either way. |

" It costs £100 now to go on a drivers awareness course, to avoid getting three points on your licence and the £60 fine!
It was £65 up until a few weeks back,
a classic case of making money!
"
Apparently they're very busy with the over 50's can you believe? |
