There is a lot made of female genital mutilation at the moment and rightly it should be stopped. However I don't understand that circumciseing boys which is not as drastic, goes unchallenged, it's usually done without the consent of the recipeint? Opinions/views? |

I think you are right but I also believe that fgm is far more life changing depending on how it is done. It's far more horrific than removing a bit of skin. Labia are either removed or sewn together, clits are removed so that girls do not experience sexual pleasure.
All this is done at a much older age and often without any form of anaesthetic |

"Because mutilating a clitoris is a barbaric act designed to deny sexual pleasure (whilst causing great pain and long lasting distress in the process) in the mistaken belief that it would "cure" young girls of wanton sexual desires.
Circumcision, culturally, is done in the belief that it improves hygiene and usually done under anesthetic. Plus it has no effect on sexual sensation thereafter."
There really shouldn't be any comparison. |

FGM is much more a male control thing. By removing the clitoris, and in some cases virtually sealing up the vaginal opening it removes, from women, any pleasure from sex. In this way they remain virgins until married (in many countries at age 12 etc).
It is abuse of women by men....again by twisting so called religion.
Circumcision is different...but I agree it shouldn't be done unless medical reasons. Or until an adult can decide for themselves. Primitive! |

I regard circumcision of male children as mutilation too. There is no excuse for mutilating a child, whether male or female, purely for cultural reasons. Female circumcision should never be done and male circumcision should only ever be done where there is a medical need for it |

There are cases in New York where baby boys have contracted neonatal herpes from suction circumcision. The wound is sucked by the rabbi after the cut is made. I'm sorry but I find this just as horrendous as FGM. I don't agree with any form of genital mutilation. Unless of course there's a serious medical reason to. |

"Most likely to be more discussed in the states where, I understand, its more routine. A quick google will poss prove enlightening?
It's very prevalent over here "
From taking to a friend in the States it is done as a matter of course, you have to ask specifically if you DON'T want your child circumcised.
She has a couple of funny stories of her friends meeting European men and while getting 'down to things' getting completely freaked out by their foreskin. It just confused them as they had only known circumcised men and so didn't know what to do with 'it' |

I completely agree it's barbaric and unnecessary and unless there is a clear clinical indication should never be preformed |

MRA haven't quite got the hang of activism and try to shut down feminists instead of sorting out mens issues.
You need someone to make a stand against it, like women have done with their causes. Feminists do also realise that institutionalised MGM isn't acceptable, but socially it still is amongst religions so we are up against that, as men are. |

When I was at uni we had to watch a short documentary on it, needless to say I hope I never have to hear an eight year old girl scream like that again!!!
Heartbreaking |

Circumcision, that is why I used the words 'circumcised' and 'foreskin' |

There are groups in the US (Intaction and Intact America) but they struggle because MGM is so tied to religion and the myths of hygiene. Also there is the 'men should just suck it up' attitude, which is a big problem, especially when trying to work with male mental health but that is another issue. |

Genital mutilation of a child or anyone else who can not give informed consent is barbaric at the very least.
Only those who are themselves sexist pigs will claim that some forms of genital mutilation are less barbaric than others, dependent upon precisely what is done, or the sex of the victim.
Like all things though, FOLLOW THE FUCKING MONEY and you will see why the various forms of genital mutilation both persist and strive to this day.
You should also be aware of what becomes of the "unwanted tissue" that is removed, it isn't all treated equally, and it does not all go to the sanitised furnace for disposal... the end destination of the tissues changes more than somewhat the who process behind the decision to remove them in the first place.
To give a non related and no loaded example, "cash for clunkers" car scrappage can be seen in one light if the purpose is to get unsafe and polluting old wrecks off the road... a job that apparently the annual MOT was failing at... it can be seen in quite another light entirely if it is like Singer swering machines early business strategy, which was to buy back your old machine, no matter what it was, and destroy it, destroying both the second hand market for that machine and the spares market, so cash for clunkers tied in with cheap credit is just a way to prop up a failing motor industry, and suddenly it looks very different from a bid to clean the roads of unsafe and polluting old vehicles, even though in both scenarios it is exactly the same actions that take place.
In monetray terms male genital mutilation is a far bigger business than female genital mutilation, which it is why it is seen as more acceptable.
Ditto abortion etc etc etc etc.
My Body, My Right.
No, that would be suicide.
By definition, it's not your body being killed.
Sorry, we'll just change the words to make then sound nicer, so instead of killing babies we have aborting a fetus, and instead of mutilating a penis or a vagina we will have -isions and -plastys

FGM absolutely isn't a make control thing. It's done by female elders in villages, who are often going blind etc, no anaesthesia used. Most men absolutely find it barbaric. Men have nothing to do with it, it's female led. Huge numbers of cultural reasons why. This is done from ages 3-11, depending on where in the world it's done
Make circumcision is also barbaric and many make babies are left with infections are scarring. It's really prevalent in Asian and Jewish cultures, and is widespread in USA. It's fine when make babies are very young, also not anaesthetised.
I feel both is barbaric- our bodies are the way they are for a reason. But that's my thoughts only x |
