"Have you seen the korean film the handmaiden, its a stunning film"
Yes, not the same thing though. The film was based on the Sarah Waters novel Fingersmith, the TV series is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name (i.e. the Handmaid's Tale). Missed it last night but hope to get it on catch-up |

I thought it was great. Made for uncomfortable viewing at times. Dystopian to say the least.
I'm intrigued to see how it plays out so will definitely follow the series. |

"What channel is it on please? "
Ch 4 on Sunday nights.
I'm recording it to watch with a friend in a few weeks.
Atwood has given this adaptation her backing so I am hopeful it will be faithful to the book.

There was a film with Natasha Richardson but I don't remember a series.

The TV adaptation is chilling and it needs to be. I loved (well, not loved because it made me sad and angry but that was kind of the point) the book. The film adaptation didn't have the same gutwrench. This version does, so far. Brilliantly done. |

I think it's a really good adaptation of the book, it gives me the chills. Elisabeth Moss is brilliantly cast. Atwood had a cameo role in the first ep too. |

When Attwood wrote the book she said that every single brutal thing that happens in the book has already happened somewhere in the world.
She made up the story but the horrific things that happen are based on things that have happened or are happening.
Shocking hey?

"I haven't seen the first series or read the book. Is it worth catching up on?
Yes. Book is always better.
Thanks I'll give it a go. "
I read the book not long after it came out in the 80s and really thought we'd never see anything like that again. As time has gone on it feels prophetic.
Then I read some posts on here and think it is entirely possible.

"Anyone watch this last night?
Not sure what I think of it yet. It's quite moodily shot. Lots of long lingering silent looks between people.
Will probably watch it next Sunday "
Wait isn't that show finished |

No. Series one, which was quite close to the book, ended. Series 2, which uses the ideas from the book and expands them beyond that story, is currently on.

Series Three is back tomorrow night (Sunday).
I'm excited to see where they take us.
Although, I may be even more excited to read Margaret Atwood's sequel, The Testaments, after waiting for over 30 years for it.

"90 minutes. Don your red habit and bonnet.
"
I never did read it. I watched the first episode but don't have time to catch up. So I'm taping it on my trusty Betamax for the winter months.
From what I've seen so far it's a Trump documentary. |

It was first published in 1985 and I read it as a dystopian near future. I never imagined it would be one I would live to see. |

That's why I haven't read it. It's too real/ possible. |

"Elisabeth Moss acts her socks off.
"
I think she's a brilliant actress and plays it all so well.
I've almost finished madmen too which she has a main role in and I will probably give top of the lake another go.
I do enjoy this series. Its themes are dramatic but not entirely out of the realms of possibility.
Everything that has happened on the show has happened somewhere in history at some point.
Haven't watched last night's yet but slightly concerned as the source material has run out and well most of us know what happened with GOT when that happened.

Season 1 I viewed as incredible 2, less so but still captivating. The strength initially was the authors amazing book. The show then had to progress iys story based on what thr production company felt it could sustain for more season. Season 2 was tough viewing at times, due to the atrocious treatment of people, especially women. I hear season 3 will be less horrific, so am pleased, as it's compelling viewing. The production and acting is phenomenally good. |

"I have not watched it or read the book. I’m planning on if for a holiday read.
What are the parallels with today’s society that people are worried about? "
Particularly the me too movement. Women's autonomy and their objectification. Victim blaming.
Religious fundamentalism. |

The premise is that the US splits with the religious right creating a totalitarian state called Gilead. It is male led but, women on the right enabled it. Women's and gay rights are rolled back and punishments are brutal and sometimes final. Women are owned by men. Birth rates low and fertile women are given to infertile couples to become 'Handmaids', there just to breed.
The new book, The Testaments, is due out in September, sets out Margaret Atwood's version of what happened to Gilead. |
