If you're a fan of David Lynch's work outside of Twin Peaks (specifically Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Lost Highway) I can't see how it would be a disappointment. But of Eraserhead imagery in there too.

But this is a very different beast to Twin Peaks. Had a Fire Walk With Me meets Season Two finale vibe throughout - but I wasn't disappointed

I watched the first one tonight, sad I know, but I actually teared up when the opening title music kicked in.

Twin Peaks had such a huge impact on me in my adolescence, it feels as surreal as a Lynchian dream sequence to be watching a new series unfold 26 years later!

Not sad! I did too. So much nostalgia of my life when I first was watching. My only criticism so far is that they've really shortened the opening credits -- do you remember how the tune used to go on and on and on with everyone's names coming up -- gloriously long. Oh I've had the best 24hrs.

Caught up with the first 3 episodes now - still got 4 to watch.

I was going to watch them as they aired on the telly (i.e. I wasn't going to watch 3 until next week!) but got drawn in! Loving it, a bit different to the classic series and, whilst trying to remain spoiler free, all of the 'action' (other than in the Black Lodge) is taking place away from the town of Twin Peaks, and I assume that eventually it'll all start to be consolidate back there in time. Ep 3 was much more 'classic' TP than the first two and I'm looking forwards to seeing 4 tonight!

I'm loving it, mostly, but can understand newbies thinking WTF!?

Anyone know if episode 5 will be released to 'on demand' this week or do we need to wait now after the excitement of the initial launch for the telly to catch up?

I'm going cold-turkey here ..

Ah well I still have FWWM to watch as I got up to date with the classic series again in the run-up to last week but not the film. I've only seen it once before but I kind of remember it as a bit of a disappointment but at least there was boobies in it!! ( . )( . )

Had you watched the original series? It would be way too hard to join in without, I agree. Even then it's very on the Lynch surreal side thus far. I have to admit I like that though, but I also thoroughly enjoyed spotting familiar faces in episode 5 just aired.

First three episodes were a Lynchian nightmare - and anyone who thinks he's gotten too weird clearly hasn't watched Eraserhead Twin Peaks was pretty much out there by television standards at the time and TV learned from it... it's hard to think of an iconic show in the last twenty five years that doesn't owe a little something to it. But, by Lynch Standards, it was close to normality - with a few exceptions.

Twin Peaks turned a lot of people into Lynch fans. It paved the way to people watching his movies moving forward. Fire Walk With Me for sure (still don't know why that was so badly received - I thought it was brilliant), Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, INLAND EMPIRE - all of these seemed like extensions to the world he created in Twin Peaks - and all three pretty much out there. Mulholland Drive is my favourite movie of all time.

The evolution of (the Arm - kidding) Lynch has led to this moment. Someone gave him money to finish his dream. It's a nightmare given form. But now, as we are in episode five, it's drifting into a world more familiar. As more original characters appear - the quirkiness of the show is returning. But not diluting the tale in any way.

Anyone who knows how it finished - I'm aware some people are going through the original - must know there was no way we could have stepped into the idyllic world we saw in the series - at least not initially.

This isn't just Television - it's art. This isn't just entertainment - it's an experience.

I think this might be the best thing I've ever seen on the small screen.

I said before - this isn't for Twin Peaks fans so much as Lynch fans.

Absolutely loving the new series so far. I'm a massive TP fan and re-watched the first 2 series and Fire Walk With Me in preparation for the new series. I went to a pop up event in London a few years ago where they recreated the cafe and the Black Lodge room and had actors playing characters from the series - it was very surreal and great fun, especially when there was a body wrapped up in plastic on the way out into a room set up like the Bang Bang Bar!

I love the script and the phraseology used by the characters. The dialogue seems like every word being spoken is important to the various storylines going on, even if you don't understand it at this point. Also really enjoying the increased weirdness in the new series and the way Lynch plays with the audience. For example, I can see the similarities between the people watching the glass box in episode 1 with people watching the actual show unfolding on TV - not knowing what's going to happen but transfixed on the box (which is the TV in our case).

Only disappointment for me is the lack of the original The Arm in the new series - just love that little guy! and somehow a tree doesn't seem like an adequate replacement ha ha. I read that he had a big falling out with Lynch and said some very, very controversial things about him, so it was expected.

I'm sure there are loads of 'easter eggs' in the series and I'm definitely going to re-watch the series again when it ends to try and spot some of them. Top work by Lynch and for me the best thing on TV at moment.

"I hate to admit this, but I don’t understand the situation at all"

Just caught ep 9, half way through now!

Right, I'm gonna say it:

I've been a huge fan for years. Even imported the S2 box set from Holland before it was eventually released in the U.K. some years back. And I was hugely looking forward to this series when I heard it was being revived.

And despite some moments of brilliance (I'm still 50/50 if episode 8 was absolute genius or a bit of a mess) I've got to say I'm a little disappointed so far. It's not what I was expecting (although to be fair I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting so what I probably mean it's not what I was hoping for..) and it's not quite 'gelling' for me.

I can't warm to the characters like the original series and it's all a bit of a hard watch.

But of course I'll stick with it to the end. I'm hoping now we're over the hump it'll all start coming together but, I have to say, I'm a little underwhelmed to be honest. And that makes me sad as I've been looking forwards to this for so long ...

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Oh that's a shame, Dan. I wonder if it's an element of loving the characters and just wanting to see what happened next, versus an embracing of all that is Lynch...a continuation merely of the story as was, would never have been Lynch's approach, and as I didn't expect that I've not found myself disappointed. I can imagine I would have been if I'd expected that though...
