instead of starting off going 3 times try twice and build up as your muscles wont be used to it.
Try not to focus too much on loosing weight either as muscle weighs more and if you dont see results straight away it may put you off going, try to focus finishing the rowing maching faster, doing the bike faster etc and then putting up the resistance

this thing about muscle weighing more than fat is a missnoma.
You wont build muscle in a few weeks, no matter how hard you train.
Training to lose wieght is very hard and loads of people lose interest very quickly, mainly due to the "lack" of results, or rather, lack of "visible" results and muscle pain
I've been a regular gym goer for over 30yrs and I'm not built like Arnie
Don't have too many expectations. The only thing you should expect is pain, and may be dissappointment if you don't have your head on right.
Best of luck though, because it does get addictive |

I go to the gym 3 times a week and zumba on a Tues night. I dislike the machines, now I do 25 minutes on the cross trainer and 10 mins on the bikes, then I do half an hour on weights. I want to be a little firmer and shaplier |

Gym?
Can't afford it I'm afraid.
However, each day I have a routine when I wake up.
First I lift the left one up for the count of 10, then relax.
Then, I repeat the same with the other eyelid!! |

if you're just getting into it maybe a class or a sport orientated session will get (and more importantly keep) you motivated for longer, possibly until you really get the bug and end up organising things around your gym time rather than your gym around your 'things' time.
Alternatively, use your new physique to get lots more yummy sexytime |

I have lost all of my weight on my own and without a gym.
I started off using wii fit at home and now run 3-4 times per week and am up to 4 miles each time.
I have never consistantly exercised in my life, you need to find what works for you and then you will stick with it.
You also need results and mine has been on my legs which for the first time in my life are lovely and shapely due to the running! |

Thxs everyone for their words of wisdom.
Have a personal trainer working out a programme for me, he showed me all the machines on friday and was with him today he asked what it was i was looking to gain from the gym and what areas i wanted to work on. Hubby is going with me for the 1st few weeks til i feel confident enough to go on my own.

As a rule of thumb, more reps with low weights tones you. High weights low reps builds muscle.
If you want to lose weight you need to get the heart pumping and a bit of a sweat on. The number of times I see a fat person in the gym lifting effectively a pencil once every 5 minutes makes me wonder what they expect to happen!
But stick to it and if you feel really sore and achy have a two days off before getting back to it. |

Start with twice a week, keep it to the point you enjoy it but not so tired it puts you off so say 30-40 mins to start with. Then add 5 mins every week till you are doing an hour. Then add a third day and if you are feeling adventurous after a month or so a forth but no more. People often forget you need rest days to recover. As long as you enjoy you are far more likely to keep going. Push your self to the limit in the first month or so and you are far more likely to quit. Have fun and enjoy |

chocolate is fine ,you dont have to give up your treats.
5-6 small meals per day, a fistful size of good carbs and a fistful size of lean protein with your veg ,its all in the dietoh and a 30 min work out 3 times a week |

ha! Love it - alternatively you have the young lads (mostly) with their mates doing those weird exercises using their like using their whole body to bicep curl a weight, or that strange 1/4 rep bench press. But they clang around a big weight so it must be working..... *tuts and shakes head in bafflement* |

You will probably find that your sessions at the start of your regime will be about an hour or so, while you get used to the routine, and you learn how to execute the exercises correctly.
Once you are settled into it, you will be in and out in 45mins or so.
You don't have to do everything, on every machine to reshape yourself.
The rower, cross-trainer and treadmill will easily be enough to boot your metabolism up a notch or two.
10mins on each is plenty. If you find you are doing this "easily", just up your effort and go a bit quicker. Measure yourself against the distance and time, rather than just one of them.
Make it enjoyable though. |

I never use weights or machines, I go Thai boxing and find that works well for me, when my weight creeps up I join in rather than teach, Thai boxing, kick boxing or some of the Karate classes will give you an allover workout and teach you some self defense and boost confidence, now give me ten |
