Bartering on insurance

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I almost just renewed this year (stuff going on) but I did the whole searching the different comparison sites, the companies that don't appear on them and then calling the current insurers.

For the first time I managed to get the current insurer to renew at less than the current policy and got a reduction on the breakdown cover. Result!

The only thing that is a little shameful is that I deliberately called at a busy time and gave them the cheapest insurance quote I could find and the cheapest breakdown cover. I did make is clear that those quotes were from different companies.

Never be tempted to just renew.

Success

Cash back sites will often pay a huge part of the breakdown insurance cost btw. Message me if you'd like any info on how they work - and not specific to insurance.

Great to see you btw, I've been wondering how you were this week

It's amazing how insurance companies can suddenly reduce their premiums when you're going to go elsewhere.

I've spoken to them in the past on renewal and said 'is this the best price you can offer me' - they've said yes, yet when I then cancel to take insurance elsewhere they can suddenly match it! Bastards!

Always haggle! With everything - Sky, broadband, telephones etc. They are all desperate to milk existing customers but are also desperate to keep you (customer retention is a big thing!) so will offer good deals if you do cancel!

I always find a cheaper quote and ring my current insurer with it. I've never paid the full renewal price. If I'm short of time I just ring and ask why its gone up so much. It's always worth a try

I haven't managed to get that much of a better deal on the broadband/phone/telly package recently on the haggling.

I might do that next year and just make up a number. What was funny was that the same companies had different quotes on different comparison sites for the same car/details. Why?

The key is to actually cancel. E.g. My telephone and broadband I cancelled and asked BT for the number to be released to Sky. That's when shit gets serious for them. All of a sudden the minor deals they offered before started to become major deals. They have specific customer retention sales teams!

I never stay with the same insurer one year to the next, as at each renewal they seem to hike the price up, not reduce it.

When I cancel And they try to,persuade me by dropping it I still cancel and go elsewhere on principal.

All insurance companies are robbing, corrupt, conning and cheating little bastards anyway.

I have moved every year in the past... but getting less than it was last year and cheaper than all the others - I had to do it.

.

It's nice (too generic?) to read a thread from you again Lickety, I hope you're well.

I spent ages reseaching house insurance and narrowed it down to three - I dislike the comparison sites as I always feel guilty about putting a false number in so get called a lot.

In the end I managed to get it for almost a quarter less with cashback so was very chuffed.

Don't feel guilty for calling at a particular time!

I wouldn't like to be working in a call centre during a busy period (well, or ever).

So we just need to challenge you, and be a cocky know-it-all to get a cheaper price?

nahh...its based on unit rates, if someone wants to lie about how much they pay currently..they'll just be in debt or credit

I told my mobile network I was going to leave, they put me on the best plan took 50% off the price and added extra data.

All I could think about was how much they must make off the people who paid at full price

£158 per month on car insurance

Most companies won't insure modified cars so I'm kinda stuck

That's how capitalism works - the point is that they make a profit on providing their service.

Good job I choose my cars on smiles per gallon rather than miles per gallon!

I get that, but was just shocked by the difference. I always get the cheapest rate for my mobile, but when it went from £35/m to £16/m with extras it took me by surprise

That worked for us. Reduced it to same as last year's premium
