Psycho is a good film but mainly for the tense atmosphere not actual horror. Same as the original 'invasion of the body snatchers' although the remake was a bit scarier.

What I hate about a lot of modern horror films is the almost total reliance on darkness to make things scary. Like a scene is supposed to be frightening purely by virture of being unable to see anything.

Absolutely, also when they have to have super loud music or other noises to scare you rather than the atmosphere and tense suspense the movie could be creating

Always a favourite of ours, the original Silent Hill movie

Not movies but the American Horror Story series have all been brilliant, a good mixture of twisting plots and old school horror.

Some recent good ones:

The Boy - Great old school horror, lots of bumps in the night.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - Stars Brian Cox, he is always good.

The Void - B Movie but good idea.

The Bye Bye Man - Looks like a slasher but is better than you expect.

It Follows - Strange modern 80's style movie

The Babadook - Australians do some weird horror lol

One NOT to watch is the latest Ring movie, 'Rings', terrible waste of a film.

I love it because it's completely disgusting but so funny!

I'm a fan of old school horror, like the Halloween films, original Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie, American Werewolf, The Wickerman, Fright Night was fun too. I don't do gory films but I like atmospheric stuff, like Stonehearst Asylum, Woman In Black (though the stage play was a lot more scary than the film) The Others, The Haunting - there's an old one from the 60s called The Innocents that's spooky.

Oh, and From Dusk Til Dawn! Terrific fun.

I'm a huge horror fan. Though I feel many horror films age quite quickly.

Exceptions being:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Halloween

Hellraiser

Recent(ish) horror films I've enjoyed include The Barbadook (once I got into it), Don't Breath and Sinister.

Anybody like American Horror Story?

I'd like to recommend Event Horizon but it is a difficult one to recommend. The writing is all over the place, many threads are left unresolved and sometimes it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

When everything works though? Fantastic!

Perhaps worth a watch at some point?

My recommendations are;

The Collector/The Collection

Don't Breathe (Thriller rather than horror, but the only film in the past few years to grip me)

Return to Oz (Not a horror, but it creeps me the fuck out. Them roller things, fuck that shit)

A is the massive massive horror fan. All sorts in the collection (Exorcist to Guinea Pig via Ichi the Killer) and she collects as many horror video games as she can.

I'm a lot tamer in my tastes, Ringu or Cabin in the Woods are my favourites.

I'm going to revive this as I've just stumbled across The Omen on the telly. Made me wonder, how do folks feel about the remake with Lieb Schreiber? I quite like it, but I know a LOT of folks take great issue with remakes.
