If you don't play, I'd sell it. Unless it has significant sentimental value associated with the relative. It's a lot of money to have as bachelor pad wall-art.
Give the proceeds to the Salvation Army, then you'll not only make your relative proud, but earn a place in heaven! |

If you've played it, and it doesn't feel amazing (like Harry Potter's wand), I'd sell it. Resale market is buoyant. And will boom again at Christmas, if you can wait. |

Keep it!
If you don't play, it's a good excuse to learn.
And it's not going to lose value so if you don't have any sentimental attachment to it you can always sell it in the future... |

If its gonna go into the lock up then sell it to someone who will appreciate it. The fact you have a few means you prob already have a favourite so even if you keep it out you won't play it often and its a classic and deserves to be played. |

i was at the wickerman festival and some of our staff had a guitar and i landed up taking it off them and locking it in the van over night cos they kept playing bloody oasis tunes...it's always oasis or stairway to heaven round the campsites! normally some twat in hemp trousers with about 40 sweaty wristbands on from other events playing it to a couple of lasses in the hope they come across as a musical, sensitive but left thinking guy (but all in the hope of a shag)

the laquers good, no gouges, some wear around the jack input but no scratches, some darkening in the corners which adds to the character and appeal (i think anyway) ... the bigsby is in good nick, no rusting or pitting and the machine heads the same |

Do you know which model it is?
If it's the Les Paul Historic they are running around £5000. However if it's a Les Paul Sunburst you could be looking at around £200,000 depending on it's conditon.

I'd say keep it. If in a good condition it's a exceptional piece of kit and considering how badly made gibsons are made now, the old ones just go up in value |

A rare and possibly quite wonderful instrument many would sell their granny, a couple of uncles and half a dozen cousins for. If its a good one, keep it, bow down and pray to it daily. All your wildest dreams will surely come to pass.

i only have one pair of hands so i keep i couple of axes in the house at any one time .... the rest in the lock up. lately i haven't had much time to make music like i used to ... but that will change |

59 les paul. Look after that baby well. In good condition you're looking at around £3/5,000. That is a serious bit of kit. Fitted with a bigsby is unusual on a les paul of that age. Slacken off the strings, put a load of silica gel bags in the case, store it inside the house where it will not be subject to large temperature changes. Talk to a professional before making any decision. You might want to consider putting it up for auction with Sotheby's or Christies. |

Some years ago (c2000?) Guitarist magazine did a head to head comparison of a real 59 and a new Gibson custom shop/historic reissue of some kind. (I might still have the mag upstairs) At that time i think the 59 had a price/value of £37,500.
A jazzman eh - that might explain the Bigsby lol - i wonder if that was factory installed when new, originality is quite key to the investors market. |

Its only worth what someone is willing to pay. Take it to a guitar tech and let him have a check over. He'll give you a honest view of what its worth etc. I can put you in touch with a few if needed |

back in the day ,les pauls where not as mass produced as now and only realy became popular in mid to late sixtees peaking in the early seventees onwards.fenders [telecasters .strats ]and jazz style big guitars where the axe of the day.a 1959 les paul in any condition is worth mad money .but op.before you sell it [dont blame you if you do play it .]coz that is history in your hands . |

so i kept the instrument in question, which is just as well as i have been asked to play session parts on an album recording for some canadian friends ... they are a jazz outfit so the axe is going to get a good run out for several weeks. the guys have managed to source a fender twin 58 for the session ... this is going to be good  |

That's a classic and a keeper. Might be worth having it looked at to see how much is orrigional.
And how much it can be cleaned up without affecting the cost, Also how to store, clean and keep it in the best possible condition.

i have been noodling about with it at home over the last 16 weeks and decided to keep it already ... the fact that it is about to earn me many times more the value of the instrument itself is underpinning my decision to keep it ... but at the end of the day, the axe is going to get to be played exactly how it was intended when it was first made ... it just seems like it's meant to be .... excited isn't the word! |

not this lock up it won't lol ... but it won't be going near the lock up until the album is recorded and subsequent touring has ended |
