I'm so tired but I cannot sleep at all.

Any ideas to help with sleeping problems?

Sorry can't help. I'm an insomniac so most nights I struggle to sleep.

Apparently having a good bed time routine helps, and switching off tv, phones and laptops etc.

A hot bath and warm milk. X

This is why I exercise a lot and do loads of puzzle games. Whatever I can to completely drain myself. I've passed the wall though and therefore I'm like a zombie at the moment

In all seriousness, hope you get some satisfying rest soon -- it's horrible not being able to. I find putting a radio play on from iplayer or audiobook on whilst lying in the dark sorts me out.

Same here. I usually start trying to sleep at around 2am and it takes a good few hours to even drift off.

I've only slept properly once within around two years - that was because I was stressed and my body went into shut down and I slept for fourteen hours non stop.

If you first think of you sleep as a wavelength that has peaks and toughs, it will first give you an idea of how people actually sleep. Your body is naturally programmed to go to sleep at a certain time. This is a time when you will begin to feel sluggish or at rest - and when you should make the move to pull the duvet up and sleep.

Once you have a good sleep routine and recognise when you're feeling rested or wanting to turn off is when you should start to turn off lights, go to bed, put away computers etc. people suggest reading a book but if you read on line then do that, either way, so long as it is within this period you'll find it easier to turn it off within 15 odd mins.

After that you should be able to put your head down and go to sleep. If you stay awake after this period you will hit a peak cycle where you're body will become slightly more energised and it'll be harder to rest - harder to sleep.

You need to hit the sleep cycle in a trough, when you're sluggish for more relaxing rest - it'll feel more refreshing and waking up will have you feel as if you have gone through a sleep cycle, waking on a natural peak.

Tablets usually have a lot of other stuff in them whereas tea is all natural

That's the problem. I go to bed at 2am pretty much every night unless I'm out (Which isn't too often) but I can't ever sleep, it takes me hours.

I make sure that I don't eat for four hours before I sleep, I don't eat too much sugar, only have caffeine on a rare occasion but still I am faced with insomnia. My diet is healthy as it can be. Ever since I turned vegetarian though it's gotten worse, almost as if I have too much energy.

It is likely you are in a peak, you are probably due to go to sleep around 10:30 11. Though it'll feel absolutely unnatural. I used to do it and sleep terribly, some times not at all but after someone explained basic sleep hygiene it falls into place quite well and you can work out when you are feeling drowsy. You are not hyped are the time, and only sluggish at 2am. You are likely drowsy around 10:30 like everyone else but want to finish of a TV show, grab some toast, finish off something you should have done earlier or distract yourself from going to bed. It might be a little later but there will be a rise and fall in energy - it's where dreams and deeper REM come into play.

Restrict artificial light from lights, computer screens, phone's etc, the closer you get to bedtime - blue light frequencies within white light disrupts hormone levels needed for sleep initiation and maintenance.

If you've got a major deficit, also ensure that you are getting plenty of rest and consider lighter, nourishing food for a couple of days.

I worked irregular shifts for over 30 years and slept for not many in each 24hrs. When I switched to normal hours I looked forward to a regular sleep pattern but I just can't get into it. I haven't had a full nights sleep in 3 years. I'm up at least 3 times through the night and sometimes don't get back to sleep at all. Not good.

Look up Michel Siffre, he inadvertently discovered humans have natural sleep cycles whilst he was living in isolation in caves.

Essentially he found that despite no human contact, no access to time or natural light, he would eat at the same time, wash and sleep at the same time and for a usual length of time.

Whilst you have insomnia, it is also partly habitual. What you do during the day will affect when, how and your quality of sleep. As a usual, people start to wind down after 6pm: people wouldn't go to the gym, eat sugary foods, go to a club, have stressful conversations or start complex work but get into a slower routine. That what you are doing at 10 should probably have been focused on much earlier in the day. I used to be very much a night owl though changing routine does help adjust clocks to a more natural sleep pattern (some pointers have been mentioned by others) The above are basic changes you can make to your psychology or physical sleep pattern.

Look up Michel Siffre, he inadvertently discovered humans have natural sleep cycles whilst he was living in isolation in caves.

Essentially he found that despite no human contact, no access to time or natural light, he would eat at the same time, wash and sleep at the same time and for a usual length of time.

Whilst you have insomnia, it is also partly habitual. What you do during the day will affect when, how and your quality of sleep. As a usual, people start to wind down after 6pm: people wouldn't go to the gym, eat sugary foods, go to a club, have stressful conversations or start complex work but get into a slower routine. That what you are doing at 10 should probably have been focused on much earlier in the day. I used to be very much a night owl though changing routine does help adjust clocks to a more natural sleep pattern (some pointers have been mentioned by others) The above are basic changes you can make to your psychology or physical sleep pattern. "

Human sleep cycles naturally follow the light so we awake with the sunrise and begin to fall asleep at dusk. Artificial light is what has prohibits this sleeping cycle.

As I said, insomnia isn't being a night owl. It isn't something that can be fixed by regulating sleeping patterns. Trust me, I have countless medical professionals working with me to try and help as I have been this way my entire life. My ECG's show that my brain is overactive so when I try and shut it off in order to sleep, it's still overly active, and when I am sleeping it is eight times more active than the average person.

Thank you for your advice, but anything like trying to regulate a sleeping pattern doesn't work. I have already said what I do to try and regulate but it just doesn't work at all.

My gp said to cut down on caffine and not to drink it after 6pm as it is a stimulent and will keep you awake..

I occasionally have a cup of coffee in the morning, but that is rare. I don't have caffeine in my diet because I've been this way my entire life.

I live by meditation and yoga, but unfortunately meditation doesn't help me sleep. That is a very good piece of advice though, thank you!

Try concentrating on your breathing. Controlled steady breaths to help clear your mind. Then a radio or tv documentary, just enough to half listen to and stop your brain whirring.the second you want to stay awake to listen to the rest you'll fall asleep.

This may sound so weird, but if I focus on my breathing, my brain starts to panic that I'm not breathing enough and then I can't breathe.

Nothing stops my brain, that's the problem

Know that feeling. I think about work, home, world problems.. just 2 or 3 breaths just to realise you've Ben hyperventilating. 1 big sigh then let whatever pop into your head. Just let it and say to yourself I will sort that tomorrow. You can't do anything tonight. That or play with yourself until you pass out

If you have BBC iplayer look up a program about sleep deprivation it might help it was on Wednesday I think
