My nearest hospital has free parking.
The problem with some is that if they didn't charge , because of where they are situated , people would just mis use the car parks and park there all day then go off shopping. |

The staff have to pay too.
A mate is a HCA and has to pay for parking in the visitors section!
Just to get to work!
I'm with you on backing that plan for Labour. At least Corbyn seems honest |

Maybe a proof of appointment or that your visiting someone is needed to stop this happening. |

I was at my hospital yesterday and today and paid £3 on both days to park. Initially I thought that it's scandalous to charge that when I'd rather not need to visit the hospital but when I thought about it, I thought what's £3 when I get free treatment? |

The thing is the £3 doesn't go back into the NHS in most cases it goes to a private company running the car parks. |

Think that if you stay more than 4hrs in our hospital car park you can get a ticket/fine.
Our big main hospital car park is normally always very busy/full car park most of the day.
I'd only use car park if I was up to visit someone.

If that's the case it's wrong but I do get how the car park money can help raise funds if the hospital gets it. |

Yes, it hardly ever gets ploughed back in to the hospital.
I went to A&E a while ago, was admitted overnight, had to pay a full days rate to get out the next day!!
I'd be happy to pay if it went back into the NHS |

We used to have a park and ride service for the two hospitals in nottingham. It was free parking and a 15-20 minute free bus ride that operated every day except sunday.
The council in it's wisdom introduced a fee for the bus a few months ago . Now it's cheaper to pay to park at the hospital. It was always hard to find a space but now it's impossible. |

The James Cook hospital near me is one of the largest in the country....but it was funded by pfi's whereby the hospital was built by a private company which the hospital lease of them. But apart from just paying the rent there is inbuilt conditions on staffing ie: cleaning, and also car parking!
All the money goes to big business and not the NHS. |

Our hospital doesn't get it either, otherwise I would be happy to pay something |

The dismantling has already begun
I'd be really worried if the NHS disappeared or if our university funding keeps headed toward the American system |

I was recently an out patient at our local hospital and rather than pay for the parking, I left my car about a quarter of a mile away on a housing estate and walked the rest of the way..... Bit of exercise and no parking charges, so a double winner |

Hmm. Don't want to go down the American system, does that not end up costing a fortune, to the extent it can cost thousands of pounds.
The NHS is probably one of the best things ever put into place. Hate seeing it going the way it is, people having to wait hours etc.

I know we have an overflow car park which is privately run but I'm pretty sure the main car parks belong to the hospital and have always thought the money goes back to them. I'll have to look into it now you've all said that |

Just read that the hospital I go to use the money from their car parks for hospital maintenance and security. I'm happy with that so still stand by my statement that I don't mind paying when I get free treatment |

There's the argument that your already paying for your treatment with your tax. |

True. I do understand where you're all coming from. In an ideal world parking would be free for everyone but unfortunately it's not |

Although it is free for the first 30 mins or for disabled badge holders, parents visiting children , parents giving birth and a few other exceptions. |

Iceland, but Aldi is closer.. |
My local hospital gets the money from the parking, it's in the town centre not far from a mainline station to London and the shops.. The parking is difficult enough there now, I couldn't imagine how bad it'd be if they didn't charge, they'd have to employ a nurse at the entrance to check if you are unwell or have an appointment...
Hmm, maybe that's the way forward, drive through reception and triage!!!
Ok, I admit, I'm being a little sarcastic, but there just wouldn't be any possible way to police it and real patients just would never be able to get a parking space.
A plus at this hospital, there is a carpark for staff that is free and I have also heard of certain patients getting their parking paid for by the hospital..
It does seem the only possible and fair solution in this situation. |

I believe in the Nhs and the doctors and nurses. It's worth out taxes and National Insurance contributions. My problem is the people that take up the time of the doctors and nurses needlessly. Something's need to be set up for better Social Care as a separate service altogether. The elderly are being put on trolleys for hours and hours in A and E. If Car Park fees go direct to the Nhs it's a good thing.
But certain factors should also be included staff shouldn't pay, if you need treatment at the hospital more than a few times a month then maybe introduce a standard reduce charge instead of paying the meter rate. |

That's all good and well if your not a patient who needs to be as close as possible. Also around the estates at the James Cook is resident parking only to stop this happening.
A list of the new fees for James Cook patient, staff and visitor fees.
The new fees at James Cook (shown against existing charges below) will be:
0 – 15mins Free
15mins – 2 hours £2.70 (£2.30)
2 – 3 hours £3.50 (£3)
3 – 4 hours £5.50 (£4.80)
4 – 24 hours £5.70 (£5)
So it's a big chunk of Your wages going to a private firm if you work a five day week. |
