Depression linked to hypersexuality?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I'm new to forums so not sure if this is the sort of thing that's suitable for here? I don't trust google enough on the subject to ask these sort of questions haha.
Anyway... I've suffered with depression for a few years and while I've actually started to feel better these days, my libido goes through the roof when I'm due a bad episode and when I'm just getting over one too.
Is this a common side effect other people have experienced too or am just a horny bastard anyway? (not bragging btw it's a nuisance most of the time) |

A very good friend of mine, who is not a member of this site, suffers from depression and often this coincides with periods of enhanced sexuality on her part.
Whether this has been scientifically linked is another matter. |

I know someone with bi-polar and I'm definitely not that crazy! I get why you would think that with the out of control libido though.
Sounds a lot like bipolar"

Could be mild bipolar. I've suffered with depression and anxiety disorders for my whole adult life, usually if I'm in a depressed state (which I haven't been for around 3 years now) my libido disappears altogether. I have found though that I often have periods of extremely high libido and almost wreckless behaviour, and these are always followed by high anxiety phases.
I think the key is just understanding how you work OP, and managing that. There's always going to be someone else who works the same.
Great thread too |

"Depression caused my labido to dissapear yeah I've had that too, but only when I was really bad. I got put on medication for a while which made me incredibly horny but unable to climax. "
I've been on that one too |

Thanks for your reply. That makes a lot of sense, the part about the reckless behaviour then anxiety I've had that a lot haha. You just worded it way better then I could of (especially after only having an hours sleep.. another thing I get while in these moods) |

Oh it's the worst isn't it! They give you these things to make you happy but they stop you having the one thing that puts a smile on your face haha |

I strongly suggest you see your doctor and get their opinion. |

Hypersexuality can be a symptom of Type I Bipolar and is associated with the manic phase more so than the depressive one. In bipolar, sex can be the 'pressure valve' on a rapid manic upswing and can, therefore, be a very healthy outlet and release, allowing the sufferer to 'come down gently' from a severe manic episode, and avoid a 'hard crash' into depression... However, a disappointing, unsatisfying, or humiliating sexual experience can also just as likely trigger the 'hard crash' into the depressive phase. Its a complex disorder and not one that can diagnosed or treated within a forum thread but if you suspect that it might apply to you, there's one piece of advice I can offer (aside from seeing a mental health professional of course)... If you are experiencing the onset of a manic episode and hypersexuality is an issue, arrange your meet(s) with someone(s) you've previously met and had a good experience(s) with - this will reduce the risk of disappointment that may occur upon meeting a new sexual partner and avoid a 'hard crash'. Keep new meets to neutral phases. Hypersexuals are hard to keep up with - you don't need to be adding that extra pressure to meeting someone new |

My sleep is one of the first things to be affected. As someone else has said above it's worth chatting this through with a medical professional, they can help make sense of what's happening.
Good luck OP |

Sounds very similar to me.
Spent many years with undiagnosed depression and anxiety. But when I was medicated my sex drive went through the roof. I also experienced the reckless behaviour that some have mentioned.
This was about 3 years ago and had calmed down now. I occasionally get bouts of it (like this week) but I'm generally more evened out with my moods now.
Speak to your gp if it bothers you. |

Well I've been put back on them so hopefully I'll have a normal healthy sex drive haha. Thanks for all your comments everyone. |

There may be correlations between them but they may be influenced by something else.
I think it's helpful to work out what your objectives are plus the degree of influence that you may have upon how you feel and behave. As you've had some prior treatment, consider discussion with your GP who has overall responsibilities for your care.

Very interesting post and really nice to see people offering good advise regarding mental health, I have suffered with depression myself and it really can make your sex drive do crazy things. |

Not sure what phase it links to but my drive stays the same but the inhibitors or normal limits can be removed so always cautious when playing and feeling down |

I'm glad people find it interesting, I didn't know if I was alone with this kind of thing.
I've googled stuff but you can't really take it seriously.
All this aside I've been to the doctors and they've put me through counselling and back on medication. It seems like a step back but I know it's for the best, just had a new job offer too which I'm hoping to get... so things do get better |

Yep ex wife had bi polar and this coincides with period of high before the depressive crash
Then no sex for 6-12 months depending on the severity.
Have a look into cognitive behavioural therapy (cbt) support and see your doctor for some advice
Good luck bud, nothing wrong with you probably just need to get a handle on it and understand your triggers and coping mechanisms
All the best |

I definitely think that the hyper sexualisation of the society can lead to a sort of 'depression' somehow.
Each individual experiences society's hypersexualisation differently though, yet, IN MY OPINION, I think most people and more generally vulnerable people are more prone to have conflictual feelings about sexuality therefore ending up being depressed.
The socially construction of sexuality somehow clashes with our biological urges. And what one perceives as acceptable due to one own perception of sexuality might be totally different from what I perceive.
