I called a lady 'my dear' and she really took offence and said it was patronising. What do you like to be called?

Hun, sweetie, babygirl, sweetie chops, babes, darling, sugar tits, sweet cheeks, bitch tits, mistress, sugar plum, belltard, sex goddess, ms, ma'am, honey.

What's acceptable and what do you really dislike??

You like or dislike?

I prefer to refer to the wonderful lady garden as a hairy axe wound myself.

None from a complete stranger or someone I'm just getting to know

My name/nick name would suffice

It depends who it's from.

I see my full name from a lover as an endearment as, outside of work and family, I don't let anyone else call me it.

I like sweet/sweetie/sweetheart too.

I don't like any terms of endearment from someone I don't know.

Just use my name

What's wrong with calling women by their first name?? I'd much prefer that.

I hate chavvy expressions such as babes, babe or hun.

I play with terms of endearment and I am happy for people to do the same, I just won't stand for anything demeaning or disrespectful.

We've our own terms of endearment for each other.

I dislike pal, buddy, mate - get these at work from customers - how do they know I'm not a psycho and if I'm their 'pal' when's my birthday and where's my presents?

On fab - babe or hunni grind my gears in a message.

Round these parts women get called love, barmaids, shop keeps, Any woman you don't know the name of

"Alright love"

"Cheers love"

No one bats an eye. Heard in other areas women hate it

Men get called mate mostly

Personally I hate being called pal.

a quandary, could you change my mind?

What's acceptable is a completely different thing depending on the type of interaction happening at the time, as you have found out what is acceptable to one isn't to another. You will have to gauge it with the person at the time.
