By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

With the Euro as it is, we decided to vacation in this country; the North of England and the Highlands

Day two and it is refreshing to meet with just about everyone who is so friendly. No wonder there are more swingers here than anywhere else; they get off their backsides, smile and chat with each other

Are Northerners friendlier than, say, Londoners?

Somewhere / Everywhere /Kinksville

There is a difference. I notice when I move around with work. You also find folk wear their heart on their sleeves further north you go.

A generalisation of course, there are always plenty of exceptions both ways

Ive always found northerners are more friendly. I do go up north quite often to visit family and the people up there are quite warm and welcoming compared to their southern counter parts.

Even here on fab I have noticed when I do get a reply or an inbox it tends to be from northern women.

Guess there must be something in those chip barms

I generally find Northerners to be more friendly, they also seem to speak as they find much more too although I've always found the South-West to be very friendly and welcoming too obviously I'm generalizing with this post before anyone starts getting offended...

I dunno, I think in the North yes people are friendlier, but it can be a shallow sort of friendliness. All chatty and that but not really caring, or using it to be nosey.

Why not try the East Midlands? It runs from Essex to parts of Yorkshire, and is only slightly smaller than Asia according to fab

"Absolutely YES, If you try to communicate on the tube say, they think you are weird ? "

Communicate?? Is that even possible?

trying to get Londoners to make eye contact on the tube is nigh on impossible - let alone converse!

Yes op - I DO think northerners tend to be friendlier than southerners - but I think it may have something to do with the lower cost of living/house prices in the north. More expenses = more stress/less smiles I think? Xx

Well it comes as no surprise to those of us who live up north you only have ot go down south and take a trip on public transport down there to notice how different it is and how sullen and miserable many seem to be.

I'm a Londoner who moved to the North West - spent half my life down south. Southerners are just as friendly as Northerners, it's got nothing to do with money or stress. And anyone who's had to endure a daily commute in rush hour on the Tube will know how crowded, dirty, noisy and cramped it is...not the ideal situation for polite conversation!

I've come across lots of incredibly gruff, grumpy and downright miserable buggers up north, and probably similar numbers anywhere else in the county I've been.

Maybe generations ago when people didn't travel as much or move from their locale the North/South divide was distinct, but with migration and the rich ethnic mix of today those who haven't experienced life in both locations are just generalizing

That is what we were thinking too

Northerners have probably less stress and therefore are happier and more friendly
