Don't come to Liverpool, it's a real shithole and you'll probably get attacked while you're here

There and to the left a bit

Bath's a good call, Chester is another one with the best zoo in the UK, some great restaurants, lots of individual shops, plenty of history etc.

Actually there are parts of Liverpool that are gorgeous. But some people's mentalities are stuck in the 80's

Aye, but the accent. Not my favourite in all honesty. Met some lovely Liverpudlian people in the past, don't get me wrong. But the accent grates on me, as I am sure the welsh accent grates on other people

Pretty much everyone from outside the city I'd bet, but Liverpool has 800 years of history, two cathedrals, 8 museums, tonnes of shops, restaurants and bars and a kick ass nightlife

If it's a really short break (just a couple of nights), maybe aim for somewhere smaller like a nice market town or old port.

Where I live for example is surprisingly interesting and quite nice, Harwich.

But almost everywhere in the country has these little gems.

York,apparently Chester x10

And you have the North York Moors a short drive away if you want to get into the countryside

I don't have an accent. I lived in Manchester for 15 years so now I just sound generically northern.

For me the Northern Irish accent grates (no offence to anyone reading!) so I know exactly what you mean. It sounds so harsh to me.

Solution: buy earplugs, visit Liverpool

See I like cold. I prefer it to hot. Find it easier to warm up than to cool down

Kettering

Brighton.

Some great bars and restaurants, lovely shops and the bonus of a nudist beach and naturist spa

You'll get a better deal on accommodation if you stay during the week.

Bath seems to very getting lots of mentions!! Edinburgh too, but I'm a semi-regular visitor to Edinburgh (and London) already, and I think I'd like somewhere new this time

Cambridge is cool, a bit expensive and full of tourists. But if you time it right a nice place for a couple of days...

Outside term time staying in a college is a good approach.

Oh good as I'm off for a short break there.

Oxford is a lovely city, lots to see and do. I agree with Bath, has a fantastic theatre and the best Indian restaurant I've ever been to. Bristol has great shopping and lots of bars. I really like Bournemouth too, but that's from childhood nostalgia.

Depends what you want from your break I guess.
