I'd disqualify Beckham (D) on the grounds he's not really a 'stage' person - more a pitch sorta chap.

The boys and girls in Afghanistan, not celebs but in the news everyday doing us all proud with the job they do!

(sorry to get a bit heavy with that one, very few celebs do us proud these days . . . . . most are just fame hungry greedy diva's. . . . . little rant over!)

The greatest of Britons' names will never be known here. They're usually nameless people, doing difficult jobs for little or no reward. They don't get medals, they don't get parades, they don't get mentioned.

They are the contributors.

I took View's "world wide stage" and suggestion to mean we were discussing performers.

Mums fit into that category . . . . (running the risk of being branded a mummys boy there!!)

"JK Rowling's a performer?"

I missed his second post.

She does do book readings so I suppose there's an element of performance involved.

I am truly proud to be British ....... and admire people who have success in whatever field: the arts, sport, industry ....

We in this country spend so much time building up, then turning on and slagging off people who have achieved... we may not always agree with what they have achieved, how they did it ( legally ) but achieve they did....

The gutter press have a lot to do with it and that is the same gutter press we have seen in the headlines this last week.... and when it suits we believe the shit they write.

Many are truly role models to the young...and by jove, a lot need someone to look unto.

I think David Beckham is an alright sort of guy, he is always the perfect gentleman on TV inter_iews, he reached the pinnacle of his footballing career.

He seems to be a devoted family man, he does lots of international charity work, and is unquestionably proud to play football for his country.

He'll do for me....

I agree, he may not be the brightest bulb but he does come across as quite genuine and like you said, a devoted family man.
