Ah I'm just me.
Upbringing very working class. So that's what I'll always identify myself as if I 'have to', despite my current role, salary and domestic situation screaming 'middle class' (but I don't see myself as that, I'm just (hopefully) down to earth me) |

Social class still exists, whether we agree with it or not. Sometimes it can be a good indicator of certain things, which generates change.
Eg, malnutrition noted in working class areas, often leads to research into how to help that area. Smoking is much lower in higher social classes, they look at why etc.......... |

"Nothing. Class system is outdated." here here
I'm tired of reverse snobbery just as much as snobbery itself. We're not defined by our origins or where we're at. We're defined by our actions and how we behave. |

When I herd him I thought the same but after giving it a lot of thought I think you are what you currently are, if you see what I mean!
Although brought up in a council house I'm currently middle class, large private house, white collar job, two cars etc and effing nice it is too! |

See, Im in the same position. I look back at my childhood and where I grew up and Im a million miles from that. Some of my old mates think Im la-de-da with the 'trappings'. I just feel lucky that I was born with a decent brain and work ethic, and maximised that. |

I was born and grew up working class. Educationally and professionally speaking I have been accused of having become middle class. Fiscally not so much; I went with emotional job satisfaction rather than financial remuneration. |

I'd agree with Mickey Flanagan, we're working class with middle class trappings. There's probably a nouveau working class made up of people like us who own cafetieres and aren't afraid to use them |

I guess society would categorise us as middle class, but I find that hugely pretentious, in my mind I'm working class. I know how to behave in different circumstances and to me that says far more about me than my bank balance does.
Locally people think I earn far more than I actually do, this has been perceived as Fred is a stay at home Dad, in reality I'm just careful with my money.

Definitely working class. I'd never come across the class system until I married my ex who was in the army and I started working for one of the Regiment's,there's definitely a class system between a lot of the ranks. |

I'd say I grew up as upper middle but married working class and lived a working class life.
Now I'm delightfully divorced and restarting from scratch. I'd say now I have the upbringing, the accent and the mindset but not the finances. (yet)

Upper class with working class trappings.
Social classes have been updated quite a bit since the outdated concepts the Flanagan is talking about. And they're a useful tool for assessing deprivation and wealth growth and reduction, social mobility, and of course on an individual level, likely values. |

I disagree strongly.
Do people really believe that American old money would marry with trailer trash ? It's not just the money that matters it's identity, attitude a way of life and conservatism at it's best.
Class. Money. Caste. ........ it runs through every society. |

We meed a Rockefeller (old money) to marry a Kardashian (trailer trash) to test the theory.
Funny though that our Royal family have bucked that trend. With Andy and Fergie... Willy and Waity Katey... potentially Harry and the actress |

I heard one that if you earn money from your Labour then you're working class. Such as cleaning, labouring fruit picking. But if you earn from a skill or qualification then you're middle. Not saying it's correct. |

I work to pay the bills and buy things in life that give me pleasure ergo I am working class? I was brought up on the biggest council estates in the north of England and went to state schools.
I have all the material property and possessions that I need because I decided that I wanted more than society had earmarked for my "Type" I took the advise of a very wise man who said the only way you effect change is to born into the landed gentry, which given my place of birth I was not, acquire large amounts of cash by (at that time) winning the pools or educate yourself. The latter was the only real option to me so I did!
Education an knowledge transcend the class system that is alive and well in most first world countries the fact that we have a royal family and acolytes of the royal head of state proves that.
So I am working class and always will be and frankly proud of my background! |

That's how I viewed it when I was younger.
Nowadays though I have to work, I don't have a *professional* qualification so I wouldn't count myself as middle class.
There are levels within each perceived class then ~ middle working, upper middle..... |

Oh absolutely. I would never put someone like "joey essex" in anything higher than working class as he earns his substantial cash from being pretty and dumb as a rock. He could be the wealthiest man alive, but i would always look down on him. |

I left school with a CSE in wood work but nowhave more verifications Ooops I mean qualifications than I can shake a stick at! I have my roots in working class traditions which on the whole are a cohesive and caring society. The middles class was invented as a description who thought that a semi detached house in suburbia and working in a bank was an escape from the working class origin. |

The Army is one of the last great bastions of the class system.
My mum was a cleaner, my dad a lorry driver (and union man). We lived in a council house.
Since then I've had a half decent education, and a bloody good job.

David Cameron's family is described as upper middle class... A 660 acre estate in Berkshire, and an 18700 acre remote Scottish island... can't be bothered to read about their cash wealth... Whats middle class? The tories seem to have convinced a lot of people that if you own your own home and earn above average wages, you're middle class, or upwardly mobile... |

Question
Does anyone genuinely care about "class"
Like would you avoid socialising with working class if you deemed yourself upper or middle class and vice versa?

In Marxist theory, the capitalist stage of production consists of two main classes: the bourgeoisie, the capitalists who own the means of production, and the much larger proletariat. Class conflict, frequently referred to as class warfare or class struggle, is the tension or antagonism which exists in society due to competing socioeconomic interests and desires between people of different classes.

And along with production, they control the press and the politicians with their well paid directorships within their companies... And if people don't believe that a class system exists anymore, their propaganda seems to be working. |

It's interesting to me that people who consider themselves working class become confused as to how to describe themselves in terms of class if they become wealthy. However other classes still describe themselves by the class they were born in to even if they move down the income scale and are still perceived to be that class by everyone else. |
