Following View's thread on great casting in a film role, how about inspired casting that worked well?
For instance, when I heard they had chosen to cast Daniel Craig as Bond, I thought, WTF?!
However, after seeing him in the opening scenes of the Quantum of Solace, I can understand why he got the role.
Any others? |

"If I can extend this to TV for a brief moment. Who'd have thought Benedict Cumberbatch could play Holmes?
I have serious concerns about Gary Oldman being cast as George Smiley in Tanker, Tailor ..... "
.
OK, let you off.
I am waiting to see if Meryl Streep can pull off being the Iron Lady myself. |

What's wrong with Sean Connery as Bond in Dr. No? He is still the best Bond, ever, IMHO! |

Agreed. Despite his enthusiasm for wife beating, he's still the best Bond. |

nearly all the ones i mentioned! where either unknown or there career had dried up until they got those parts, Bruno Ganz performance in downfall is an exception as before and after hes still not really known, but one of the greatest performances in cinema history as hitler! |

"I think Gary Oldman will be great - hes such an intense actor. Though I wasnt keen on his role in the Harry Potter films, Gary does bad boys excellently "
.
He did well in the newer Batman films as a good cop though, IMHO.
A very watchable actor. |

I think Gary Oldman is great, such an intense actor, though I did not like his roles in the Harry Potter film. Gary is suited to the evil villan, bad boy roles |

I have never seen the Batman film, in fact I have never seen any Batman film ever, because I hate them with a vengeance, even though my two fave actors were in the film, Gary Oldman and Christian Bale, couldnt entice me to watch |

That's not really George Smiley. I'd hate to see him portrayed as some mindless torturer. |

It was only my opinion that Gary plays bad boys brilliantly, thats not to say that he is one dimensional. Hes an exceptional actor who I believe has turned his hand to a whole degree of diverse roles. But I personally like to see the bad boy roles, because thats where I find him the most attractive |

I'm not saying it won't work - just that I have reservations. This is a chance, maybe the last, to introduce Smiley and le Carre to a whole new generation which didn't see, and would probably never watch, the BBC series with Alec Guinness. I'd hate to see that chance blown by miscasting.
Le Carre ought to be as well known as Fleming and Ludlum - and he's still alive. |

Perhaps his writing is too deep/clever to be appreciated by more people? |

Possibly. Indeed Fleming is the print lightweight of the three but a not too heavy going adaptation for movie goers and tv viewers can sometimes be the catalyst for people to delve further.
Look what Branagh as Wallander did for Henning Mankell .... and Branagh wasn't even much good in the part. |

"Elijah Wood in The Lord of the Rings trilogy needed very little make up, that guy was born to play a hobbit! "
Billy Boyd lives near me and it's quite a strange sensation to walk into the gents in our local bar and see Pippin Took shaking those last few drops off his willy. |

One of the best pieces of casting I've seen was Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. It was a role so vastly different to anything else I'd ever seen him in that for a moment I doubted it was actually him. |
