Whiskey In The Jar by Thin Lizzy was a cover version anyway, as it was a traditional tune to start with

Can you do a cover version of your own song? When Burt Bacharach plays live is he just doing cover versions of other artists' interpretations of his songs? Is Bruce Springsteen's version of Because the Night a cover of Patti Smith's (he does sing her lyrics live now though)? Genuine question, not being arsey!

Yes, I think you can.

Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U and gave it away to one of his bands. Once Sinead O'Connor had the massive hit with it, he started performing it, even calling it her song.

Some good shouts

Nick Cave is just a brilliant interpreter of other people's songs. His version of 'wanted man' (written by Dylan for Johnny cash I think) is amazing as is his cover of Leonard cohens 'Avalanche' (even Cohen himself thought it was better). And of course his album of cover versions 'Kicking against the pricks' is mostly awesome.

Glad someone mentioned Eva Cassidy I don't think I could choose her best cover. Fields of gold (sting) , somewhere over the rainbow (Judy garland) , imagine (John lennon) are all up there but for me her best cover is wonderful world (Louis Armstrong) especially as she chose it to be her final song she ever sung.

An honourable mention had to go to Johnny Cash and hurt (nine inch nails) and sinead o'connor nothing compares to you (prince)

Scunthorpe

My personal favourite is The Housemartins' - Caravan of Love (Originally by Isley Brothe Isley), but a very close second would be Skinhead O'Conner doing Princes - Nothing Compares... especially is you watch the video whilst listening to it.

"A few more that I really like:

It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork

Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell

Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash

Joni Mitchell wrote 'Both Sides Now'

Jennifer Warnes - First We Take Manhattan (Leonard Cohen)

Frank Zappa - Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Stagger Lee (Trad.)

Mr"

Stagger Lee from Glastonbury in 2013 was epic! We were on the opposite side of the stage to white dress girl, unfortunately!
