based on the iron content of 0.3 per pint and your results being 9 and you need 12...

means jo you'd have to have 10 pints a day

I know how you feel.. I am chronically aneamic.. Have been for many years.. it never gets better but I have learned to manage it.. I find though that eating plenty of green veg and eating plenty of fruit thats high in Vitamin c makes a huge difference.

I always know when mine is low as I am just so tired.. I have blood tests every 2-4 weeks depending on the last results..

Hope it sorts its self out..

Katie. x

Apparently, the story goes that the Iron content of Spinach is highly overstated due to a researcher placing a decimal point in the wrong place.

And if Spinach is so great, why doesn't Olice Oyl get mentionned more often on the celebrity i'd like to fuck theads?

Yes between 12-14 is normal. Mine went down to 6 and I had to have a blood transfusion over three days in April. Mine's down to my fibroids - I'm housebound three days every month. Will be getting an injection to bring on the menopause, so that will no longer be a problem.

I take three iron tablets a day - well I'm supposed to but sometimes they make me feel funny, so take at least one...until I feel faint - silly I know.

You can build your iron by eathing green leafy vegetables, offal, red meat etc...but I don't eat red meat.

The NHS used to offer those little stumpy bottles of Guinness or Sweetheart Stout to hospital patients with certain types of illness.

Strange thing, I know when mine is low not by tiredness but I crave the smell of nail varnish and dry cleaning. I've been known to loiter outside the dry cleaners in the station just to get a whiff. I've gone into Superdrug and bought cheap nail varnish so I can sniff it.

slightly off tpoic but ive a severly underactive thyroid and im anaemic. the Doctors have stopped my iron tablets because the iron 'eats up' the thyroxine and it still results in me feeling tired. Its making me think about all the iron rich foods i eat.. maybe thats why my thyroid is so low

Eating a good healthy sensible diet can do wonders for the body. Things i didnt even know would happen have happened since ive eaten well and lost weight.

Like i didnt know it would cure my hot flushes and i was talking to my nurse and mentioned that i hadnt had one for ages and she said that was the reason why.

Looked it up on the internet and low and behold its right

When I trained as a nurse many moons ago, all the elderly patients got a glass of stout after lunch and dinner.

A good wholegrain, seeds and nuts diet with red meat and lots of green leafy veg should do the trick but the iron tablets are often needed to get the iron levels up before the diet becomes effective.

Iron tablets have side effects like every other medicine but its worth persevering if you do get prescribed them but mind your stools will be dark in colour and dont panic thats just the excess iron that your body cant process being eliminated.

Irn bru is of course fab but the diet one only has rust in it.

If you're taking an iron supplement - take it with OJ, or something with hight vitamin C content. Vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron better.

Yes, Guinness does contain iron but not enough to make a real difference. By all means have a glass or two if you fell like a tipple.

One thing to watch is that some people (like me have an intolerance to certain quantities of iron tablets. The symptons? Chest pains, difficulty in breathing and a night under observation in hospital! It`s irritation of the stomach putting pressure on the diaphragm!

It's a myth that guinness is rich in iron, it has relatively little iron content, but the alcohol it contains does affect how the body absorbs iron.

I am a renal patient an I have no kidney function and have erythropoietin (EPO) injections to help control my hemoglobin levels. EPO is a hormone produced by the kidneys used to regulate red cell production. I also have occasionally iron saccharate injections when the iron levels drop too low. Last year I had a spell where I was teetotal and my iron levels where poor requiring regular iron injections, I started having a couple of drinks a week and iron levels improved because I was able to absorb more iron from the foods I was eating.

I have the same problem taking ferrous sulphate but not with ferrous gulcanate. Don't forget to take Vit C with them though to help it bind.
