Just what is Political Correctness?

How do you define it? Where are the boundaries, what is unacceptable to you?

Anyone?

This is subjective. It means different things to different people.

It's the same as Health and Safety.

Both subjects have been drawn to extremes and beyond plain old common sense, and the age old qualities of respect and courtesy.

I am not really into bending over and parting my cheeks to be fucked and that is how i see the PC thing. I would rather be true to my self and if someone doesn't like it then let them voice it. It doesn't often happen though face to face

Political correctness:

Affecting, or acting according to the interests of status or authority within an organization rather than matters of principle.

Political correctness has gone stupid. Never in my entire life have i ever intentionally caused offence by what i say. Yes i am aware that some things we said as kids can now be seen as offensive and name calling. But it was across the spectrum, no one got left out, if you wore glasses you where four eyes, overweight you where fatty, thin you where beanpole. Everyone was something or other.

I also dont know what is politically correct and whats not. Some people will get offended by something someone else wont. Just look at the threads on here.

I think you cant get upset if someone says something to you and are ignorant/unaware that they are offending.

If someone says something intentional to upset you then that is different.

It would be a nice world if someone "accidently" offended us that we could point out that we didnt like the term and the reason why and leave it at that. But this is the real world.

PC to me means applying common sense and decency.

It does not mean teaching our kids to sing ba ba coloured sheep.

The sheep is black, you get sheep with black wool.... so let it be.

The blackboard is actually black, the chalk is white.. let it be.

Kids see no prejudice or look for any whether in a simple song or the colour of their playmates skin.

Sometimes I think PC does more damage than good by over-complicating and over-compensating looking for that which isn't there.

My daughter once asked me why a black man was the colour he was, I explained that just as we have black, brown, red, blonde hair, so to do we have different coloured skin.

She was two, she accepted that explanation, and that as far as I was concerned was all she needed to know then.

I posted on Jemima's thread about what I percieve PC to be, so I'll just paste it in here too:

"

Political correctness is by it's nature in conflict with common sense. Decisions are often taken that fly in the face of something else that would be a logical practical solution to a certain set of conditions."

I fully understand that there are things that can upset classes, groups and genders and these must be looked at to see were the offence comes from.

For instance the “N” word! There, I wouldn’t even type it. It is not OK for us to use that word, but it is OK for certain classes of Black people to use it! Some Asian guys use the “P” word, but get very cross if you or I were to use it! Women can go out virtually undressed these day, but woe betide any guy who happens to look just a little too long!

Mrs R is very pissed of with all the PC stuff we have to put up with. She used to get wolf whistles and cat calls as she walked into town at lunch time. Now guys are to scared to do it. At work, no one dares to say that she looks nice, one guy did it to a woman in another office and he was “investigated”. Where will it all stop?

Other side of the coin? Adverts like the one for Hamlet Cigars. Taken off our screens because woman found them demeaning! Look at adverts now.. There are quite a few that are making men look stupid or making them look like sex objects! If it was wrong to demean women, how is it OK to demean men? Not heard any women complaining!!

Let’s just hope that the “PC Brigade” don’t get their way, this forum would be a dark, damp hole without banter and “heated discussion” on many and varied topics!

Teachers who wanna take kids on trips? No problemo, just tear up those 150 pages of H & E bollox and now they just have a 5 page pamphlet to complete. Bout time too.

Community Officer who cant jump in a lake to save a drowning kid? Not anymore. Thanks Dave.

Rumour, you raise the comment about who does and who doesn't use the "N" word. The same can be said of using the word Black.

I'd an instance many years ago when a black African applicant attended a work inter_iew at my company. He sadly, did not meet the job specification; indeed, had he read the advert fully, he should have picked up on the facts in front of him in the advert.

Within 3 hours he returned, with his lawyer, and I was accused of being racist, as I'd turned down his application because he was "black".

When I countered by displaying his application form against the job specification and showed, bit by bit, how he did not qualify, his lawyer then said, "that's your problem, not his, because you are white! Give us £1000 now and we'll forget about this travesty!"

They were literally thrown out of the premises, with four letter worded threats too. Strangely enough, I'm still awaiting their lawsuits landing on my doorstep!!

But when existing African, American and other ethnic staff on our payroll heard about this, they went mad, not at me, but at those supposed fellow countrymen who actually create more hostility and divisions by wrongly applying what they perceive as the PC rules.

Nah, go elsewhere. the only ones who get involved with sheep are the Welsh.

Like the definition of a Leisure Centre, is a sheep tied to a lamppost in Cardiff!

Funny, it's always been white people telling me I should be offended at things I didn't even realise was offensive!

I had a Scottish boss: we hit it off from the get go. He would get me coffee, I'd get his, I'd call him tight because he never bought me a drink: at the time I only drank water and he refused to go into a pub and pay for the "French muck" I drank.

So we had our own little ribbing session. Whenever he got me coffee he'd always say the same thing - "still taking it black like your men?" To which I'd reply "sticking with what I know". A white colleague heard this and told me I should report him for being a racist!!! Now...I ask you!!!

Another time I got pulled up by the Director of Personnel because I commented on a gay colleagues shirt. He was a subordinate and I was told my comment was inappropriate and unprofessional. If I'd been overheard telling a female colleague her dress was nice - which I have done - that would have been ok!

That to me is PC gone mad, not the "right" for a white person to call me the "n" word because they feel they'd like to, which is the one thing "those not racist" always seem to latch onto!

Oh dear, as I am the only one to have mentioed the "N" word, I do hope you didn't think I condone the use of that word! I see that as an historical benchmark of the perceived differences perpetrated by white people way back! In fact those examples I gave were only to highlight the use of the word by those who are of that race, colour or creed.

A friend of mine (now sadly deceased) used to take the mickey out of himself by emphasising his accent. He was Asian Indian and had us in stitches with his antics. Trouble was, he "taught" others that it was OK to take the piss out of his race, when in fact it wasn't.

As I said, I do not condone the use of these words in any context, but some out there are sending mixed messages to the apparent confusion of many people!

Its a concept for people who site in townhalls and local govenrment buildings all day doing nothing...dreaming up various ways to rid the world of all of its ills and failings..

The trouble is they dont actually realise the damage they are doing to the very things they are trying to 'purify'..

Wankers!

I remember a few years ago, when I lived up North, I was looking into fostering a child. I went to a seminar where a social worker was jabbering on about political correctness and 'ethnic identity'. We were told that 'mixed race' is an unacceptable term nowadays and the expression 'a black child with one white parent' was more appropriate. Cue a roomful of dropped jaws. I knew there and then I could never have dealings with an agency where political correctness had gone that mad.

I went to a seminar for diversity and awareness (they have dreamed up another title for all that now)

The woman stated that we should refer to black coffee as 'coffee no milk' as it could make 'coloured' people feel 'awkward'...

Point one...black people dont really like being referred to as 'coloured' (it me it always sounds like an excuse of a word)...so that was a bit of an own goal for a start..

Point two...If I was black the only awkwardness I would feel is knowing idiots like this were actually 'standing up for me'...and magnifying a problem even more.

The worrying thing this woman was supposedly 'educated' and being paid a good wage to spout shit
