Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I'm off to New York in June and my sister has bought tickets to see the NY Yankees play the Red Sox. Can our Fab colonials give me a quick run down of the rules please? Also, how long will we be there? I've been told it can last as long as a Test cricket match. And should I buy a hot dog while I'm there? |

Rounders, but on a large scale
Basically there are nine innings per side.
An innings ends when three of the batting side are out
It doesn't really get a lot more complicated than that
There's the usual razzmatazz you get with any American sporting fixture, and is a lot of fun.
I'd it's a day match just make sure you're in the shade or have lots of suncream.
The stands aren't called the "bleachers" for nothing |

Yes! Wear sunscreen! Seriously.
A game lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours...unless it goes into overtime. Lots of people leave during the 7th inning though, to avoid traffic.
You can get a hot dog, but food and drink are really expensive in stadiums so keep that in mind.
Also, take a look at their website and see what you're allowed and not allowed to have with you when you go through security. The last time I went to Yankee Stadium I had my kindle for the subway ride, then found out I couldn't bring it through security. They have lockers outside, but fuck that.
A lot also depends on your seats. If you're in the nosebleed section then you won't be able to see much of the game so it will be more about the atmosphere of the stadium.
And keep in mind that you're in Yankee Stadium while they're playing the Red Sox - under no circumstances do you support the Red Sox Their rivalry is well known. |

You'll be there a few hours and you'll have a great time! Get ready to stand and sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame
There are 9 innings, when the fielding team gets 3 outs, they switch round. I'm sure you'll pick up the rest as you go |

"Test cricket can last 5 days. Americans don't have the patience for that "
Well the World Series is a best of 7 game series, which takes longer than 5 days... |

I am an avid BaseBall fan, supporting the Arizona Diamondbacks, but even I laugh at how they call it the "World series" when it's only the Americans involved |

"I'm glad I saw this, we have tickets to see the Yankees play in September. Sounds like it will be more fun than I imagined "
Yep, looks like fun.
Thanks all for your input. We're at an evening game so probably won't need the sun cream, but its good to get a real taste of America. |

Yes but a test match is one game, a test series can be 25 days. |

The complicated bit comes into batting/ pitching
The pitcher has to throw the ball over the home plate for it to be "fair".
The batter has three "lives" (strikes)
If he misses three fair balls he's out (three strikes and you're out)
The pitcher can vary his throw, but if he doesn't throw it fair it's called a "ball".
If there are three balls against a batter he can walk to the first plate.
Sometimes the pitcher will do this to get a poorer batter up to bat next.
The "fun" starts if the pitcher roughs up or hits the batter, which usually leads to a punch up often involving all the teams and coaching staff |

As others have said the game will take about 3 hrs.....
Absolutely you have to have a hot dog whilst you're their...
The soxs are the yankees biggest rivals so there will be plenty of both sets of fans there...
You will have to get there early to have a look around the museum... even as a mets fan growing up I have to say it's spectacular

Wasn't it sponsored by the world newspaper or something like that which is why it is called the world Series ? Can't be bothered to Google it because I'm on my phone |
