Chicken was Sunday dinner for those that could afford it.
Most times we had minced beef in a pie with veg.
When we could smell chicken cooking in someone's kitchen it was like being transported to heaven.

Chickens wer for the eggs when they stopped laying we eat them. stringy tough things with a great difference between the breast meat and the dark stuff (they were well fed too) nowadays the meat you get is about 60 days after hatching and they are breeding them so all the meat is paler and full of anitbiotics and hormones |

Yep. Chicken was very expensive. Fish was cheap so was beef and lamb.
We had chicken and rabbits in the back garden for the table as did lots of our friends but a chicken from the butchers was beyond the reach of most families on a regular basis. |

I'm only a little younger than you but my mum used to carve a raw chicken in half, stick one piece in the freezer for another time, then we'd have *half* a chicken for Sunday lunch between *4* of us. We hardly ever had chicken at any other time, unless it was some highly processed minced article covered in breadcrumbs and purporting to be chicken. But then I grew up in a very frugal family ... |

We had chicken in rotation once a month. Back then we didnt know about spag bol I would cook long spaghetti and shake on tomato ketchup instead of spag in a tin.
Lots of food we have now wasnt around when I was young. Still had rationing till '53. |

I remember the first time we had spaghetti bolognaise, I was about 10, we felt very cosmopolitan

"When I was a youngster we had turkey at Easter. We had beef,pork or lamb rest of the year on a Sunday. Oh and I'm not from a rich family I grew up on a council estate "

Ours was full but it was roast on Sunday
Then sandwiches for my dad's bait....rest would be boiled for a chicken stew on Monday.

Yes mince casserole mash tatties and dumplings, when the kids were young. Son remembers first having spag bol at about 10.I used to make jam roly poly too or syrup pud all filling stuff.
I remember Wimpy burgers used to love those far nicer than McD.Toated buns, burgers were so juicy. |

M hubby would go shooting out Henley way Lord of the Manors grounds. Bringing home rabbit which he would have to gut and clean in the garage. I have never eaten it but he and the kids really enjoyed. They now eat anything.
