Let's face it, they're nothing more than hassle and a leftover from a bygone age. The banks are shut and shops open at stupid hours. Not to mention the traffic, don't get me started. Roads at gridlock as hard working families in their desperation to get away for a few days cause absolute mayhem.
I always end up working anyway so they mean nothing to me. Wouldn't it be better if instead of being told when we have to take time off they could be added to the annual holiday allowance? |

Industries like the hospitality trade, don't include bank holidays, they get 28 days holiday a year and it's up to the individual to book their time off whenever they want it.
Good morning by the way |

I love bank holidays because it's the only time off I have from work when I know no one else is working either so I'll actually be able to have a proper break from work without being hassled by colleagues or customers

I work bank holidays too. It's great.
I get to go to work on empty buses.
I don't have to fight traffic as I take my weekend holidays at better times. And prices are cheaper Off Peak.
I get 7 extra PTO days per year.
Now, if only people would GO OUT and do something FUN instead of shop where I work on those bank holidays. |

Bank holidays should be kept as most people work Monday to Friday they get extra long weekend that are not taken as part of a holiday allowance obviously there are some that its included in there 28 days allowance. I do a 4 on 4 off shift so I get to work a lot of them with no extra pay or days in lieu. I apologise for the bad punctuation |

As it happens, we discussed this very thing ourselves yesterday...after spending our usual short trip to the shops for the days food, dodging total Wayne kerrs with their 2 trolleys worth of food because the shop is shut for one fucking day! The plan was to pop to work for an hour but the roads were gridlocked near to Naughty Towersville so that plan went out of the window thanks to the seemingly endless procession of overloaded hatchbacks, and caravan dragging folk.
What is the point? If you want a long weekend, just book a couple of days off work and do one. You'd think people would learn...Every Easter bank holiday is the same. 15 hours on the motorway to get to Wookie Hole or similar. Pitch a tent/caravan, endure uncomfortable sleeping in close proximity to other people. Buy over priced tat from tourist hotspots. Then do the return 15 hours on the motorway on Monday to get home. Sounds like my idea of Hell on Earth.
Or am I overthinking it? |

It's the panic buying that drives me crazy! Yes the big shops are closed but little local shops around will be open. I live in a village and the village shop was open Christmas Day!
I don't mind the bank holidays as it's extra days with my boys but it comes off of my holiday allowance and as I have to save a week for Christmas, I don't have much left to play with really! |

Iceland, but Aldi is closer.. |
I love em and loathe them.
For me they are great, you can garuantee that there are plenty of things happening and the events usually pull out all the stops to try and out do the other events..
Every year, they just get better.... Tall ships on the Thames this weekend with a fireworks show in the evening.. Definitely worth a watch.
However they cause havoc to my work..
A single bank holiday usually loses me a week off of a project, so this time of year is particularly challenging...
So for me, bank holidays are kinda ying and yang... |

"I like them, but they could be distributed better. Most are between Christmas and June, with only one later in the year. "
This... may day should be July day, and dead guy getting up weekend should be october |

"Any time off from work is fine by me!"
Exactly!
And surely for the ones that do work they get paid more money?
It's all good.
I wont be going to any annoying tourist places with millions of other people and their irritating brats!
I'll be eating roast lamb with family, drinking too much and enjoying the time off.
Whats not to like?

I understand all your salient points but my op suggests that if these bank holidays were added to the annual allowance insteas then people would be able to choose when to tame the time off automatically distributing them better. No one wants to waste hours out of their break stuck in traffic jams, that only causes frustration and spoils the whole experience. |

Sounds great! Add a few easter eggs and would be pretty much perfect |

Lots of people enjoy bank holidays as a family/ friends get together ... if you all chose when to take your own days what would be the chances of still all having the time off together
So you work them and its no big deal for you ... but i dont think they should be scrapped just because some people dont want to join in |

Well then your company is breaking the law. The exchequer pay for the bank holiday not the company via tax deductions for all staff employed by the company. So if you work the company HAVE to pay you double or give a paid day in lieu.
Look into it as if you've worked a lot of bank holidays and never been paid double or day in lieu then you company owes you a lot of money! and belive me they wouldn't like it if you explained this to HMRC as it's defraud of her majesties government! |

I gèt that. When i was in employment i always worked bank holidays and very much enjoyed the double time and day in lieu. Now i'm self employed and still work these days, this time with no benefit at all so it makes no difference to me.
I just think that it would be better all round if people had more choice when to take time off. I'm not suggesting they should be deprived of holidays. |

But you do benefit as the HMRC should pay you for these days that you work via tax relief but you do have to clarify what work you did on the day and claim for it on your tax return |

I am not sure if its been previously mentioned. The idea of bank holiday was so the majority of workers got the chance to have time off together.
Though in modern times this has become harder for families. Especially people in service industries or Emergency sector. I am lucky enough to be enjoying 4 days off due to Bank holidays so I happy. As they'd have to pay me large pools of cash to work them |

No if you are honest you think you get no benefit from them and are a bit bitter that other people are enjoying them ... people wouldnt be queued up i that traffic to head somewhere if they didnt want to be so its not "doing them a good turn" by suggesying they might want more flexibility in their days off
Maybe you should pair up with scrooge and see if we can have our xmas holidays spread throughout the year too |

Pretty easily drawn conclusion given how much you talk about how you work then anyway, they mean nothing to you, you get no benefit from them ... the stream of negative opinions you have about then and then referring to the desperation of families who are enjoying them ... maybe they enjoy the easter break and you dont ... doesnt mean they should be banned |

Perhaps but you're still wrong and i think you're making a bit of a meal of this.
Bank holidays inconvenience me personally which is why i don't like them, nothing more.
This modern age seems to me to be about giving people choices, which school to send your kids to, which GP to see, which broadband provider to go for etc etc. I merely propose giving people more choice as to when to take time off from work. It seemed like a good idea. If, on the other hand, they'd rather be told when they can that's up to them.
Finally, if i fancy a day at the beach i simply tell a client i'm not coming in, it's great and one of the reasons i went self employed. I don't have to ask, how can i possibly feel any bitterness when i can do that? |

Because you want the system changed to suit you
If your post and opinion is really just about choice ... then you already have that freedom of choice so whats the problem
Your post ( as you have just confirmed) was about how bank holidays inconvenience you and you dont like them |
