Despite the claims made by Christians that Easter has it's origins in the Judaic Paschal it is actually a Pagan festival.

The word Easter comes from the Germanic 'ostar' denoting a movement towards the sun. Eostre/Ostara is a divinty of the radiant dawn and an upspringing of light, something which brings joy and blessing and, therefore, easily adapted to the Christian resurrection myth.

Along with Beltane it is a time of fertility, hence the rabbit and egg symbolism and should be celebrated accordingly with feasting and fires. It certainly is not a time for self denial.

In 325AD i believe, by a council of Christian bishops. Easter is actually connected to the full moon which us why the date changes each year.
