Of the horrific terrorist attack in London recently, do you feel that our police should be armed.
We can't help but feel that if our officers were armed they would be able to protect not only themselves but the public in a more effective way. |

No. Not all of the service are suitable to undergo training, and the style of policing doesn't lend itself well to arming.
The British public generally moan enough about the police in the UK, so probably wouldn't support it.
Enhance and support the already trained officers. |

I also think being armed doesn't necessarily stop things happening. Yes it can deal with the perpetrators faster hopefully reducing casualties but if theyre not in the right place at the right time what's the point? |

"No it hasn't done America any favours has it. Look how many people get unlawfully killed over there every year. "
Though let's be honest the UK is one of the few in the world not to be. The US is always used as a yardstick to the UK. Why? It's culturally different...use Germany for instance? No major issues there? |

Nope! Totally disagree. And the fella was shot by armed policemen wasn't he?
There was a very enlightening program on a while back where brit policemen showed USA cops examples if how armed (Or even unarmed but violent) individuals are handled here. The Yanks pretty much said in all cases "well they're getting shot". ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |

I don't think people having guns is ever the answer to anything, police or not. I'd much prefer they had things like tasers and tranquilisers, when properly trained to use them. The situation in America terrifies me. |

People are misinformed as to how accurate and easy these things are to use. |

"No i don't.
We have armed response units. They do their job and they do their job well.
"
They do. And they are there for the a specialised role. Not general public policing. And I would not wish for all of the police men and women to have to face the decision of taking a life like American cops do so regularly. |

More police officers would be a better idea, the amount needed to arm, train, continuous practice during service etc would run into a stupid trillions of pounds amount knowing how any government past present or future would spend...
An extra policeman would have been better than a gun...

True, but should the extra unarmed officer just be another statistic in dealing with someone lethaly armed? Options are needed. Not necessarily all of them. |

Maybe but who's not saying that the extra police officer might have been in a position to stop the assailant from using his gun?...

There and to the left a bit |
Aside from some of the excellent points made against arming our Police above, the other thing to consider is whether arming them would actually serve to push gun crime up.
Can't compare to other countries but compared to the US the number of gun related crimes here is minimal, and that may well be because our Police are mostly unarmed i.e. Most common criminals don't carry weapons as a means of defence in case they're caught in the act by an armed officer who has an itchy trigger finger. |

Also this
Escalation thought the authorities upping the ante.
Although the good old USA is like it is so as the people can put up arms against a corrupt government and also to keep the king of England out ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

In most terrorists hands their weapon will usually be of a higher firepower than the average bobby would be armed with, plus they have planned for the act, shooting someone running away and instantly responding to a fatal wound by being shot are completely different scenarios...

No...
The level of responsibility is given to a few am fine with that.
Am not a huge fan of the police's individual ability unfortunately. For a variety of reasons.
They're a parody of a police force especially in Liverpool. |
