just triggered by a comment i wrote in another forum, but when did it become almost mandatory to have the body beautiful to be considered attractive ?
thinking back to when i was in my late teens / early 20's nobody ever really bothered about body shape / body image
you were either fat or thin / handsome or ugly
nowadays though we seem to love to define ourselves and other people by how toned they keep their bodies
there is a whole industry built on it for heavens sake !
i don't know the figures but i would say that the failure rate in achieving fitness and weight goals is much higher than the success rate
that equates to a lot of unhappy people, all feeling they are inadequate in some way
this isn't the rant of a disgruntled middle aged fatty, cos i happen to be content with myself just the way I am
it's more just a train of thought that had never dawned on me before |

I dont think most people think that only people with perfect bodies are beautiful to be honest. Most talk of bodies on here are of extremes where most people probably fall somewhere inbetween perfection and out of control. Some people do profess to not liking fitties but seem pretty interested in them when they appear. This is a sex site though of course.

nothing wrong with wanting to look good though. Id only change my body for my benefit no one else's, if someone doesn't like what they see they don't have too look. |

You say it but i don't think they people do think its mandatory to have the body beautiful to be considered attractive. It is more fun playing with someone who is fit full of stamina for experimentation though. |

What is the perfect body? Is it someone who has all defined muscels?
I dont see anyone as having the perfect body, no matter what size all of us have body imperfections. Scars and lumps and bumps, stretch marks. |

the mandatory bit was a bit tongue in cheek tbh
but you can't deny there has been a whole shift towards the 'requirement' to attaining a perfect body or at least a body that people would term 'fit' |

the title of this thread says it all...........some folk DO have a fascination with body shape!
as someone else said you only have the one body and if you dont look after it then your health may suffer.
of course there is extremes on both sides of the spectrum and whilst some like being mr/mrs toned others are comfortable being BBW/BBM
as long as there is an attraction then everyone is happy |

perfect is possibly too particular a word but i do see the word 'fit' banded about a hell of a lot on this site and others
'fit guys only' 'fit seeking fit' etc etc
i would say on the gay scene in particular the demand put on guys to fit the mould (no pun intended) is definately prevelant.
thankfully i discovered the bear / cub / chaser scene who appreciate a fuller figure and hairyness levels
still tho even with that 'scene' there has been a shift towards muscle in recent years. |

Not sure how old you are but there has always been an accepted form of beauty and people have always gone to extreme lengths to pursue it.
Catherine the great insisted ladies in her court had 12 inch waists,Georgian ladies died from lead poisoning from their face paints.
In the 20's women starved themselves to meet the flapper idea, and many diaries of the time record what we would call bulima.
Toned is one of the fashions now, actually i think we can say we have far wider standards than in some previous generations, |

i am not talking health issues relating to being fat - that's a whole different topic (albeit related)
i am talking about LOOKING fit - ie using gym / exercise / diet etc to define how we look
and how the perceptions that most people(but thankfully not all) harbor have changed over the last 20/25 years |

and i think its generally accepted that by doing regular exercise and having a healthy diet will not only help people to look and feel good but also keep the overall body healthy

for clarity, i was airing my views on the move towards how people are deemed to be attractive these days (compared to 20 years ago) based on how they strive to attain a better physique and the success levels of their 'regime'.
it isn't a thread about how exercise makes you healthy
i think most people grasp that bit ! |

What is hardest to achieve or what the fewest people have seems to influence what is deemed attractive by the masses and has done for decades... well centuries actually.
Before the package holiday a tan was the in thing… though decades before that tanned skin was thought to be a sign of being poor, as only poor people worked outdoors and so the ladies of standing bleached their skin with arsenic. Now because everyone can easily get a tan, no one really cares.
When in countries where food is scarce being plump is often appealing. When food is plentiful and the nations average size grows then we (society) look for the next hard to obtain thing.
And so in our modernised society of plenty (yes even the poor in this country have plenty compared to the really poor countries) everyone pretty much has access to everything…. so the goal becomes something else yet again.
Why didn’t people need gyms 50 years ago? Because we didn’t have the convenient lifestyle of today. And so with temptations a plenty one of the hardest things to achieve is control …….. control of our greed and sloth enabling us to adhere to the healthy yet affluent lifestyle.

I think the media have a huge responsibility for making people feel inadequate about themselves. We're forever being deluged with diet's for this and that, what's bad for us etc, biggest loser programmes, 50st heavies who have never worked and are a drain on society - the list is endless.
Those that do have perfect physique's often never have to work at it, they're naturally slim and in today's society that is considered attractive.
IT has made us all body-conscious to a degree that looking in the mirror will almost always draw a sigh of defeat that we haven't achieved that which we've been told we should have.
And they're doing it at an earlier age too. I don't recall ever seeing weight loss issues targetted towards my age group when I was a young teen but I see it in my daughter's teeny magazine's (the things a dad has to do to 'keep in touch' with youngsters today lol). |
