Has anyone noticed the demise of"the scrap metal man" where i live we used to get a guy once a day now its about every 2 weeks, yes i know metal has dropped in price but are we going to see......the end of the scrap metal man just like the milk man or chimney sweep or mobile shop.
What else do we not see anymore ???. |

No money in it is there. I used to leave bits of car that i no longer wanted at the end of my drive way such as old brake campers and such, and they would vanish. I had to give up and take the last lot to the local dump after 6 months of them being sat there. |

Most scrap guys in Leicester have started to do waste as its cash but with metal every thing is traceable as scrap yards can only pay by cheque or straight in to a bank account.
In Leicester you hardly see any scrap men most are from birmingham where it seems you get a better price ???. |

Had a new cooker installed in February. The fitters put the old cooker outside to put in their van to dispose of. By the time they'd installed the new one the old one had gone!
I'd have saved £40 if I'd known! |

In our part of town, there's still a weekly collection by two guys with their horse and cart, taking away metal, old appliances and other items at their discretion.
There's still a daily Ice Cream van, and across town, milkmen are out 6 days a week on a lot of rounds.
Plus the council refuse collections, are weekly for some items, fortnightly for others. |

When I got a skip last year I shouldn't have bothered as virtually everything in it got taken by other people. I'm amazed what they find of interest. |

"Used to hear him near me but not seen him for a few weeks "
Base scrap metal is about £65.00 a tonne take out the diesel running costs expenses etc i would say they must be on less than the national minimum wage now a days hence why you never see them.
20 washing machines is a tonne so that takes a lot of collecting to make £65.00. |

when I was a lass there were regular (weekly) collections from the rag and bone man with his horse and cart.
I remember if we gave him a bag of rags (old clothes) we would get a goldfish in return
there was also the pop man, the knife sharpener and the liptons tea van..
all long gone now .. |
