£675 sounds like it gets you a car to use for another year. It's not an investment in the car's sale value but its value to you; shopping, commuting, etc. Seems viable to me.

Having similar issues here.

My car is worth about 1500. It's just cost me 457 to get through the MOT.

Altogether it's cost over £800 in the last 6 months.

I'm sticking with mine at the moment because hopefully it's had most things done to it. I can't afford a new one at the moment. Hopefully this one will keep me going until I can get a new one.

Good luck op with whatever you decide.

Sadly cars are expensive, but can't do without them!

Getting rid of my car has saved me a small fortune!

I either walk or ride my bike.

Important to make sure you have a plan for next year though rather than arrive at the point and be in limbo again.

Went through this myself and it sucks

If you spent similar money on another car then you'd probably be buying someone elses problems.. better the devil you know and all that.

Mold

You have to balance the likelihood of future repair costs against what you've spent.

Is it likely that you're going to need breaks, clutch, alternator/ timing chain etc. doing shortly ?

Has what you spent going to last you for the next two years ?

Otherwise you might be better off buying something to replace your car.

Just take a good look at the service history of anything you might buy and see what's been spent on it

Sometimes its better the devil you know. Go to a motor factors for the parts!!! Exhausts are usually £20-25 a section. Stabilizer links about £10 and budget tyres should be about £35-45 each

O o O oo

That seems a lot for what you have wrng with it. Any other garages close that can give you a price for the exhaust and thingmagijig? Then you can go get the tyres at a tyre place which may work out better. Also if you think about it, the tyres you would need anyway so it is only the exhaust and thingimajig that is costing extra money.

If you know the rest of the car is working ok, then it might be a better the devil you know moment, you could buy a car that someone is getting rid of because it is causing them too much hassle

I've always believed in better the devil you know, I have a van (for work) and Mrs a car, although a cost, I don't get upset with things that wear due to use, tyres, brakes, bulbs, blades etc as they wear on any vehicle. You buy a new car they will also wear out. Other than catastrophic engine failure I tend to keep them on the road as long as possible although Mrs does like a change, lucky I've not been part ex'd yet! x

Get a 2nd quote, shop around for tyres they are always more expensive in a garage than a tyre specialist, some even do exhausts. If you stick with the car then at least you know those bits are good for a few years!

If that's all the car needs and it's reliable I'd keep it. That price does seem high though, try a few more places.

I get customers asking me what to do but I could never answer as it's there pride and joy. If the car is all good drives well then spend the money as next yr it might not cost as much for the mot. I try and help customers with there car as best as I can if the car needs shit loads i.e. Welding ect then yeah I tell them to get rid. Got a car here a Peugeot 206 and back axle has snapped personally I wouldn't bother but they want the work done as it's been a reliable car. So the choice is yours. Unless u got money to buy a new Car

Shop around to get the work done. Don't use the mot garage. Even better is to get your mot done at a garage that doesn't do any other work. that way you know that they're not making stuff up. Happened to me one year. The garage i had my mot done quoted me just under £700 i took it to another garage, it cost me £80...

It's amazing what garages will try and charge. My last mot i needed welding on a sill and a lamda sensor changing which was seized into the manifold. Total bill for mot and Labour was £80. I supplied the sensor as i could buy it cheaper than the garage could supply it.

Depends what car it is and what specification the tyres are, performance tyres are obviously going to be more expensive than a family run around. Surely some nice local fab guy could help you out.... nudge nudge wink wink lol

Depends on what the car is but 4 tyres around £50... try taking them off the estimate then get them priced separately. MOT priced vary in England but should only be around £40

Suspension arm.. not massive cost depending on car...so that looks like a big labour bill!

Is it a main dealer? If so go somewhere else and get price and look at tyres done by a seperstr garage

We are in the same boat, run an old Volvo convertible on LPG, but mechanically it's ill, possibly terminal, weighed it up and going for another newer one with fewer miles & I'll put the LPG on the new one.

Price of the newer one with 11 months mot & mechanically sound is just over half the price to fix ours.

Exactly what it needs. Women are an easy target. But on the subject of tyres... compare black circles etc to kwik fit. Ridiculous!

Exhaust qoute from cat back on one of our older £600 "it'll do for now" jalopies was £294.

Probably a big part of the bill.

Yep I used to always make a point of saying it's here for the mot, you will not be getting any work from a failure unless very minor as I'll fix it myself & bring it back for a free retest.

Is that because they're usually driven by old people who rarely drive them above 20mph and keep them maintained?

More the fact they're some of the best cars built for quality, solid engines. The paint durability isn't great though

My 2007 type r has never failed, just keep the oil topped up and they're bulletproof.

But if I was the OP, I'd be cutting my losses.

There's lots of good advice there for you OP. 4 new cheap tyres £160, last you for two years, exhaust £40 to £60 from eBay or a breakers yard,.suspension thingymagig could be anything from a £10 droplink to a £100 wishbone. That's total of £320max.get a mechanic to fit it all for you, if you know anyone with a garage behind their house they'll do it for about £40. Maybe less if you flash your boobs at him. £80 for the mot, and you're laughing for another year. And you'll know that the car is good for that time!! If you buy again you could be buying someone else's trouble, sure they could be getting rid of their car for the same reason as they are spending too much maintaining it!! Better the devil you know!!
