A tea cake has fruit in it. A roll is a roll is a roll. It's either a soft roll or a crusty roll - unless it's for a burger, then it's a bun

"A tea cake has fruit in it. A roll is a roll is a roll. It's either a soft roll or a crusty roll - unless it's for a burger, then it's a bun "

This completely!! Only thing to add is that a larger version of a soft roll is a bap.

If it's large and floury it's a bap. If it's large and crusty it's a crusty bap. If it has sesame seeds on and looks like it needs a burger then it's a bun regardless of size. Anything else small round and bread related is usually a roll. As are the long thin ones (unless they're hotdog ones in which case they too are buns). And the posh mini ciabatta things and suchlike. Apart from mini baguettes, which are petit pains.
