How low can you get?

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Yet another travel agent has gone bust..

Just happened to be the one I used for many years so my holidays are a little messed up but I will get my money back, even the £1000 I payed just 2 days before the company closed... Yeh, like they didn't know they were closing!!

However, I have found out that the travel agent called one client and asked for full payment of their holiday as it was due weeks earlier than anticipated..

Not thinking anything wrong, they paid in good faith the £5000 final balance for their holiday last week ..Well, I say holiday, actually honeymoon to the Maldives..

Like me, they would have got the email on Saturday to inform them of the closure of their travel agent.. I suspect they too contacted their resort to find that no money had been paid for their honeymoon and they had no flights or accommodation booked.

They now cannot rebook their holiday as it's now going to cost almost £10,000 more for the same trip as this short notice.

I cannot help feeling so sorry for this couple, they must be absolutely devastated..

What was supposed to be the most perfect day of their life will now be tainted by the cruel actions of a director of a business...

But from this I have learnt many do's and don't to safeguard your holiday..

The first for me was if you make a payment from your credit card to another bank, it's classed as a cash payment and not covered under article 75 of the consumer credit act 1974.

So what savvy advice can you give..

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Get holiday insurance before you pay for the holiday.

"Get holiday insurance before you pay for the holiday."

Be careful with the holiday insurance policies..

Not all will cover your trip before you leave..

The biggest issue, which I found out too is that when you have to rebook months later the price has gone up massively.

Try and find an insurance that will cover consequential losses as those are what really get you..

I found out a couple of years ago that holiday websites store your IP address ,hence the reason the holiday was cheaper first time round was because you was a new site visitor .

"Make sure the travel agents is atol protected "

Atol protection it seems (I may be corrected) renews on the 31st March for all Atol registered companies.

You can check on the Atol website for the current status of registration for any travel agent.

Also, any business outside UK will not have Atol, such as low cost holidays who moved from the UK to Spain prior to collapsing. Apparently the refund value is £8 per person for anyone that lost their holiday when they collapsed.
