not a union vs league thread..... lol

anyway since we have a football thread, and a wildly popular 6 nations thread....but i wondered how many people are interested in the club/provincial game..

i love watching the pro 12 and the european competition.... and since the lions tours announcment is in 18 days time, i thought it would be nice to have a general rugby thread...

so anyway i'll start,

fan of munster in the pro 12... no really fussed about english club rugby, french refs fascinate me.... and super rugby i can love or leave (looking forward to seeing how the new 2 super franchises in argentina and japan will do....

but super geeked about the lions tour... so i'll probably fill this thread up on my own during the provincial games, especially since the kiwi's are letting all there test players play in the warm up games.....

With Sky and other pay channels taking the live games monopoly, we go to our local club to watch the 1st and 2nd XV games.

We're also league fans too, with our adopted club being the Rhinos (worked with a rhinos nut for 15 years).

Looking forward to the lions tour hugely, with some pub viewing no doubt to make sure we don't miss a tackle.

if Toulon win.. the semi will be in Nice

i love rugby this time of the year because of the quality of the sides its almost like test match rugby....

Having played in for them in my youth I'm a Mold RFC fan; I like the fact that Union is still very grassroots and that small local teams are the life blood of the game.

About 10 years ago I got taken to a League game and have become a St Helens fan.

being from hull, league is in my blood. I can watch union but has to be a good game for me to watch. I do find it confusing sometimes how they go back for a penalty 5 mins after the offence has taken place.

okay... left this one for a week.... still debating on my first lions XV...

anyone rugby want to be brave and suggest any "bolters" to get on the plane...

i'll still my neck out... if i there is going to be a surprise name on the plane (someone who didn't play in the 6 nations) i'll give you two positions...

i think one will be a winger.... Chris Ashton has played really well... but I get the strange feeling that Gatland may take Deny Solomona at Sale (shades of graham henry taking a then uncapped jason robinson straight out of league)

also.....i think prop is wide open.... have to say they haven't really impressed me this much this season (other that Furlong who has been the only world class prop and is nailed on at 3) if WP Nel recovers from his neck injury in time.... and can get a game or two in for edinburgh... I would take him!!!

i would love to see o'mahony on the plane... i think he just misses out....

"Not surprised Hartley omitted, though and being Welsh, this is a bitter pill to swallow. thought Lansbury had a good 6 nations....."

I think Launchbury is unlucky to be left out.... you could almost call it a straight choice between Launchbury and Kruis....

i would have taken both launchbury and Johny grey over Kruis and courtney lawes...

ross moriarty choice came out of nowhere... it just feels like he was picked for one 60 minute proformance against england (it may have been the best of the 6 nations but it was one game)...if he was taking moriarty as a cover for back row/flanker... i would have taken jamie heaslip instead!

no happy garry ringrose got left out for ben teo... not happy only 2 scots in the 41.... should have had a bigger representation than that....

bottom line is....

no selection will please everyone.....

Sometimes its not always the best 15 individuals that make a team, but those who compliment each other and play together......

Kiwis are on different planet mentaly re rugby, we can only assume Gatland knows and selected those of a similar mental nous....

It's an interesting Lions squad... surprised at some of the Welsh players getting selected but then it was to be expected from Gatland,he's always favoured Welsh players even when there's better options available don't think Warburton is the right man for captain either,Alun Wyn Jones would have been a better choice

I've played both codes, was raised on League, moved south from Salford when I was a kid, mum and dad had their wedding reception (and 30th anniversary) at The Willows.

Play Union currently, but have considered finding a league club before I get too old to play at all.

Being a Salford fan suddenly isn't full of dissapointment - I wonder how long it'll last? Some storming performances this season so far, I'm going to be very interested to see what happens against the Dragons....

I agree

Heaslips an out and out 8 though, I'd of had him in instead of one trick pony vunipola to begin with.

Haskell is an awesome 7 but can do a very effective job right across the back row and that for me puts him ahead of all the rest, but hey everyone has their opinion.

I just hope we can compete because it'd be great to be playing for more than pride in the last test

Faletau has been a class above

The backs have really struggled first half especially Hogg and Sexton

Farrell already making a difference

Call me simple, but when Warren Gatland cites 'jet lag' as an excuse for the sluggish, and rather lacklustre start, it begs the question why they simply didn't fly out a few days earlier.

Garland being who he is, I imagine he has his test 15 in mind already, so would expect to see a near total change of starting 15 for the blues game.....

I think a lot of players were still tied up in domestic finals last weekend so Monday was probably the most realistic

it will be because this team had none of the people that played in last weeks finals/play offs by design....

so anyone penciled in for the test team may only play 40-50 on wednesday and get them ready for the crusaders game next saturday...

Yup.....although there is an argument that a scratch side, with a limited emphasis on game plan and more open to individuality and "heads up rugby" will actually prove more troublesome than an over coached super rugby side?

Rugby is all new to me...

Essentially we had a choice of boxing or football...

I watched union about 3 years ago for the first time and just loved it. It's like a new world to me stupid as it sounds.

Can't get into league tho?

Just for the record - ex player here. Lifelong Tigers fan (live in Yorks but born in Leicester). Not really surprised by the Lions result today. The tour started so close to the end of the domestic season and even with the Sarries players getting an extra week off (hurray for Exeter!) the Lions side isn't a team yet. The squad know each others weaknesses due to the 6 Nations, but don't know how to play to team strengths yet. As an Englishman I was impressed with Faletau and Moriarty! Sinckler's a bit handy for a prop though, eh?

League is a game of speed, Union is a game of power.

I like and have played them both - as a spectator I prefer League, you see more of the ball.

You could always pop to StHelens...

I agree, how could he miss the cheap shot on bigger after he fielded that kick, the guy was miles of side not retreating and bigger wasn't expecting the tackle.

Good job the tmo knows the rules cause the refs fucking terrible.

The two no8s are having a stormer, and Reece web looks mega sharp.

i think we will get a better feel after the crusaders game on saturday....

we also know they said that everyone in the squad would at lease get a start... so if they are as good as their word....

jamie george should be hooker, conor murray at 9, owen farrell at 10, george north on a wing....

i know i have said it in the 6 nations thread before.. but i don't get the love with Jack nowell...

liam williams had a shocker, elliot daly didn't really do much.... robbie henshaw and 1/2p are the only ones of the back that can hold their heads up after that...

as for the forwards... again, i don't think any of them played badly!!! that back row competiton is seriously high!

if they are going to play "up the jumper" football against the all backs then the scrum against 1 of the potential all black front 3 today looked really solid

you can see why eddie george loves sinckler as one of his "finishers"... boy is playing well.... i can see him being a prop off the bench in the test matches...

ken owens looks to have raced ahead for test match hooker... i also think george is again suited to hooker on the bench

how they are going to pick the test match 2nd rows and back rows because they are playing well... the only one i have crossed out so far is henderson...

very positive first half.... more people today trying to play themselves into the test team than playing themselves out....

hoggs injury looked nasty....surprised watson went to full back rather liam williams...

also JD's knock shows the limitations of playing T'eo... he can only really play 12, but most of the other centres can play 12 or 13... so having to basically play farrell who was having a really good game at 10, now playing 13 isn't great...

if this was a test match you could have played sexton at 10, farrell at 12, and then a henshaw moving from 12 to 13....

other than that... forwards are playing well......

I sort of understand the reasonin - the players are there in New Zealand already so minimal travelling.

But even as a Welshman I'm not convinced. They are never going to make the test side and there are minimal games left otherwise so in reality they are training material.

The rugby championship proves you can fly players from Argentina to New Zealand, South Africa to Australia and all combinations thereof, on a weekly basis and play rugby.

So the excuse that they are closest in Japan is just poop.

Please note when the squad was announced at the beginning there were more english players than than other countries. Were brown envelopes handed out then ????

I never once heard at the beginging the english welsh or irish media say please exclude 1 player from each country as youve only picked 2 scots & allow more scots to go. Scotland had 2 players picked.

At the end of the day if your not happy then dont watch it.
