I'm actually gonna do a serious and sensible post and say that it is something that I have wondered about. Soapy is a great sport and a well liked man and you know that the majority of jibes are for fun by people on the forums who think a lot of him.
But I've seen other people new to the forums jump on the bandwagon and do it as well. Maybe Soapy knows them from old, but the vibe they give on their post appears they do not know him. I think that's wrong.
In a previous job we had nicknames for everyone until the top nobs informed us we weren't allowed to do it anymore as it was a form of bullying and people were forced to answer to names that deep down they didn't like. We were in uproar as most of us struggled to remember what peoples names were, Perv and Gravy (goes with anything) were two, along with a female called Dartboard (more pricks than a secondhand one), thankfully I was just called tits, never knew why.
Anyway eventually we were alloewed to say nicknames if people were happy but nobody would own up to not being happy so we carried on.
People who are overweight, short or believe they are unattractive laugh at themselves, usually before others do as a defence mechanism.
So as long as Soapy is happy that people tease because they love him rather than out of maliciousness then I'm hoping its all good.

Our vertically challenged bubble lover takes everything in his short little step he knows that we're only here for a short while and he's too long in the tooth to get pee'd off about it (bet they scrape along the floor if they're not filed regularly).
We luvs ya soapster. |

I can't say I haven't thought the same once or twice.
I often take the piss out of myself, because I am comfortable doing it..... not sure I'd be so comfortable if everyone thought it gave them the right to take the piss out of me too.
On more than one occasion it's upset other people, because the joke also applies to them, even though it is not directed at them but at myself.
It probably won't stop me doing it.... but sometimes (just once in a while) I am a bit more aware of what I am saying and tone it down a tad or not bother saying it. |

Why not change one letter in that last word above, so he becomes a 'soapstar'
From my point of view, from what I've learnt about "Soapy", his and my styles of humour mix, so he is fully aware that whatever I say, he'll take it all in good humour!

Self deprecating humour can be a really good way of getting to know people and describing yourself.
Look at the famous comedian, Les Dawson; he first did that at a working man's club in Hull, and found it worked.
Terry Wogan does the same!
I do so myself sometimes, especially if I'm meeting or talking to someone. However, do so in only in only little quantities, or you put people off. |

I'd a defence mechanism too that I used at school.
I was born virtually blind in my left eye, and with very short sightedness in my right eye, so I wore glasses. You may know the "milk bottom lenses" type.
I was forever called "speccy" or similar, but I cottoned on to what one teacher said to me one day, when they call you 'four eyes' reply, "Wrong! it's three eyes" (as one eye doesn't work!) & it will confuse them!"
Worked a treat, seeing the bullies look at me, trying to work that one out! |

I think with everything discretion needs to be applied. All of us can think that someone 'enjoys us taking the piss out of them' but do we really know 100% that is always the case. They tell us its ok and they would never show a weakness cos they've had to stand proud over it all their life. I have an unusual surname which sounds like a famous cartoon character name. Now I always get 'haha oo yeah like the (insert cartoon character name here) and I smile politely and pretend its not the two millionth time I've heard it. I'm not offended by it but I'm bored of hearing the same thing. I'm more likely to find original humour more funny.
I believe that Soapy revels in the joking but those who are new to the forums who don't know him doing it . If at any time he got fed up I think and hope he'd tell us |

I certainly agree with what you are saying. I would joke and banter with the ones in the forums that i have become friends with and have got to know. I am more cautious of my replys to people im dont know as well. I would also like to think that if i ever said anything that someone didnt like or found offensive they would say to me. Sometimes humour over the net doesnt come across as intended as you cant hear the tone of voice or the expressions that people make. Cant abide bully and would never attempt to put anyone down, as in my opinion people who do that are only trying to big themselves up. x |
