I got stung last year doing charity garden work for a disabled couple, 60+ stings. A + E the lot, i have a few scars where they became infected
BUT just now the monster of all wasps was in my kitchen bazzing around like it was on speed, alot bigger than average wasp.
Could it of been a breeder coming out of hibernation or a foreign one.
I just had a panic attack and am feeling quite emotional so please don't tease me |

Hubby had to kill a huge one yesterday in our bathroom i know it wanst a bumble bee but not sure if it was a wasp or hornet but yes it was bigger then expected so watching this thread with intetest |

wasps can fly at over 40 miles an hour,,wasps can smell another dead wasp,(his pal,,you just killed) from over 5 miles away.
wasps can climb trees,,wasps canspeak more than 6 languages.

Kill it, and ask questions about its breed later.
Wasps gained an immortal enemy from me when I was attacked from a nest as a child. (Like you OP they waged war on me. 60+ stings also. I still had them in my clothes at the hospital.) |

I've had some larger wasps in the last few days. I figured they were the Queens getting ready to start colonies. But not in my back yard
When people say massive wasp what are we actually talking? I'd say a big wasp is about and inch long.
If it is one of the giant ones at about 2-3 inches or so then it's a wood wasp. And less likely to sting I believe  |

For future reference you can buy a foam spray should you have a best nearby at b&q ..you only have to get it near the opening of the nest ,the wasps carry it into the nest killing the nest ...it sprays about 12 foot away so your safe ...
It works I've used it ,cost around £10 ..stay safe people |

I was strimming some open ground once at work and hit a wasp's nest. Got stung 5 times, it wasn't a pleasant experience to say the least. Had to sit down for an hour before I stopped shaking

Reading this has made me itch. I fucking hate wasps. We had a nest under the roofy bit of our conservatory last year. I had to spray in there every day. There were 100's of crusty corpses by the end of summer. I believe they don't nest in the same place twice
If it's really big OP, I would get a neighbour to kill it!!! |

There was a reference on a Radio programme this week about Hornets, of which some of the European species have invaded the UK.
They're more aggressive, larger than wasps, but share the same colony defence tactics as wasps.
Their sting is far more painful too. |

And hornets are a lot mor vishous than wosps. Just keep clear from it till it levee's or settalls on sumthing then trap it in a glarce. |

The unseasonably warm weather is bringing them out early.
Then, when the weather snaps back to cold, it makes them grumpy...and more likely to sting...but also, more lethargic...So kill the fuckers while they're in slo-mo!
On the upside, there will be less of them around this summer.
Thank fuck for that, useless creatures!

European hornets are chestnut brown/orange and yellow, with a slightly more hairy body.
My guess it was a large (queen?) Wasp. |

Ive noticed a few big wasps recently, somebody said its the new queen wasps looking for somewhere to nest. Whether or not its true but is plausible I guess other than that I've no advice to offer. They're horrible creatures though |

When dafuq did wasps get a royal family? It's just a big bee fs get it squashed, spray it wi hairspray if it can damage the ozone it can kill a bloody wasp fs |

I had one get inbetween my toes (was wearing flip flops) when I was getting a cat in the house quickly before a lightning storm. Little shit stung me. I thought I was a grass seed so I picked it out then seen it was a wasp. I beat the crap out of it with the flip flop. Then I cried. Evil things. |

My ex wife got stung on the face by a wasp, little fucker stuck his stinger in and attached itself to her lip .
Fortunately I was able to kill it by smashing it with a spade........

I got stung about 40 times a couple of years ago. I feel your pain.
I've seen some massive bees already but no wasps yet.
Try not to get panicked. The chances of it happening again are very slim. |

i don't kill insects in general, but wasps i make an exception for..always have,especially since last summer when one stung my hand and i dropped and smashed the most expensive bottle of wine ive ever had! bastards the lot of them! |

I will say killing one wasp isn't the end of the world as long as his buddies aren't watching but exterminating whole nests is pretty shitty and not good for the eco system |

It's the ones with jet engines, and with wingspans measured in metres that I worry about Especially if they're equipped with Hellcat missiles |

What are wasps actually for?? OK they eat greenflies but so do ladybirds and they are nice.
Over the years I have probably killed many more wasps than have stung me but I don't feel that the war is being won,they are still out there.I really hate the idea of killing anything but I'm more than happy to make an exception in the case of these little vicious,psycho bstrds...they deserve everything they get.
I once had to get a pest controller to come and destroy a nest in my loft...it only cost around £30 (you think I'm going up there with a spray can in my hand??? No Waaaay).
I love bees,by the way.They are nice and only sting you when it's absolutely necessary. |

Yes i like bees,there a bit like the boris Johnson of the insect world, and they make honey too(bees i mean,not boris!)
And wasps are sneaky,they will creep up and sting you without any provocation, i think there the Alistair Campbell of insects |

I went for a wee in the bushes once,
Disturbed a wasps nest and got stung on my willie......
Went to the doctors and flopped it out across the desk......
Doctor said to me "Oooh that looks nasty, what do you expect me to do with that?"
So I said.........

The wasps are larger than average, indicating they are queens. The males die soon after mating, but the young fertilized females leave the nest in the winter and search for a warm, sheltered spot.
Unlike bees, wasps do not store food to see them through the winter. Bees survive from nectar but wasps catch insects which are in short supply over the winter months. In temperate regions such as the UK, a wasp colony will only survive for one season. The colony will start to break up in the Autumn and the workers will die of cold. The young fertilized queens will overwinter and emerge in spring and start to search for a suitable site for future colony. |

Hornets are brown and yellow/orange not black and yellow like wasps, much bigger and far less aggressive. They also prey on wasps so actually i quite like them. |

the Queen hornet can be solid black with orange legs scary looking things quite big too and the sting is massive |

It probably was a hornet. I get one nearly every year in the garden about 25-35mm long but clearly passing through . Obviously thinks my garden is rubbish and not worth staying! |

Only very rarely are they black, being naturally less aggressive means your less likely to be stung by them. |

I've never been stung by a wasp and only once by a dead bee caught in a spiders web, how you may ask? Good question. I was running through an alley and ran through a spiders web about 10 mins later I noticed the web dangling from my shirt so naturally i went to bruch it away with the back of my hand straight into the stinger. The end.
If you don't go around flapping your arms around or panicking or provoking them you won't get stung.

If its 2-3 times bigger than the average wasp it will be a queen looking to prepare her nest for summer, queens hibernate through winter & emerge when it starts to warm up.
I found a queen in the snow a few years back & put it in a small fish tank feeding it on cats meat until it warmed up enough to let it go, people said I was crazy because it would sting me given the chance but a tiger would eat me...two beautiful powerful animals that I wouldn't stroke lol. |

Every couple of years my bathroom is invaded with enormous bees for a couple of weeks - I have to remind myself they're harmless as they are really loud. What is sad is when I see a few huddled together every evening for warmth (according to pest control who naturally wont touch them). |

Working as a gardener i've been stung by wasps hundreds of times, the most in any one attack was about 30. Bees only twice and hornets never.
Organisms all play a role in their particular ecosystem, even if it's not obvious, so i only consider destroying them in extreme circumstances. |

Queen wasp, they are looking for nesting spots now. WD40 around all windows and doors, wasps don't like it and will go elsewhere. Scrumple paper bags and hang them in any trees in the garden. Look like hornets nests and wasps will keep away. Just look after the bees, all out early this year |

I've even been stung on two occasions by dead ones. Once on the hand by one in a box up the loft, the other time, one managed to die in my shoe- arse in the air
