I am not keen on reboots of a franchise that fundamentally alter the character unless it is to update the character. I don't believe a gender or race change would benefit the character or franchise. What they could easily do is to extend the franchise. In the way Felix Leiter went from white to black, you could have Felix Leiter's story as a black man, or even Moneypenney's back story as in the comic Velvet

True but being truly anal Bond would still be set in the 1950s. I think it is one thing to revamp a character that is out of date, it is another to take iconic figures and change them to make sections of the community good about themselves rather than being in the character. Can you imagine Shaft being white and gay! It may be a positive societal step but is that the character. I think it is better to create original figures or use minor figure and not have confusing back stories as happens in the comic world. But that's just my view. |

To be clear I have no problems in forcing diversity where there artificial barriers. But there are better ways of increasing diversity than reimagining known icons, in my view.
I have just noticed in the new Bond comics Felix Leiter has a standalone comic. |

Interesting comment. Surely if a sufficient number of a population is gay, or black, what is wrong In principle with a gay or black hero. I know I may be arguing against myself but James Bond was conceived as English, in the days when the differences between parts of the UK were distinct. The casting of a working class Scot raised eyebrows. Bond has been played successfully by a Welshman (ahead of his time), and an Irishman. M has been a women. Theoretically it is not impossible for,blacks, gays and women to portray being a British agent it may not be such a leap for one to be Bond (being ironic here). It does not work for me but I imagine the decision will be market led rather than any imagined egalitarianism. I am personally for creating new characters than revamping old ones. |
