Depends what you are looking for.

are you looking for primarily a party destination? a party destination with good weather? just good weather without the parties?

Well if all you want to do is get away to the sun, and aren't bothered about partying then you'll definitely get more for your money if you book a holiday that departs just after new year.

Prices can drop by as much as 60% after new years day for a lot of destinations.

a few years back I got an all inclusive liveaboard dive trip to a place in the red sea called the Brothers Islands (easily a world top 20 dive destination) for just £550 because the trip started on the 2nd of jan and I booked last minute - normally it's at least £1200, and just the previous week it was £1800.

I know it's more expensive but done it a few times now and had some good deals, but now looking for somewhere warm !!!

well you'll get the best weather around the indian ocean at that time of year - Goa, Sri Lanka or the maldives will all be stunning (maldives has the best diving ) but it's a hell of a flight for just a week's holiday.

The weather's not bad around the red sea coast in late december, plus it's relatively cheap and loads to do, but you might find it gets chilly at night. I'd look at Dahab rather than Sharm as its a bit more laidback and only an extra hour or so from the airport.

over the years I have brought New Year in New York, Amsterdam, Berlin and Denver... and Glasgow.

Berlin was best, closely followed by New York

I wouldn't recommend New Year in New York if you are travelling alone, though it is great with a friend or two.

Dublin on the other hand... hell yes. In fact try Cork.... you'll be adopted by someone and their family after half an hour and still be in the pub with them lunchtime on New Years Day.
