Niki loves them, the fancy names, the look, the different flavours, the blending of different cultural food, the ambience and experience.
I cannot stand them.
I find them full of pretentious bullshit.
When I order a plate of food, I expect a plateful, i do not expect to have to ask for a microscope to find where they put the food on my plate, and be charged an extortionate amount for the privilege.
Don't throw a fancy name on fried potatoes and add an extra few quid on top because it has a fancy name.
Bollocks to your fancy sauces, your silly shapes, and remember it's a bloody plate, not an artist's canvas, it's still going to end up as the same stuff in the same place, so don't mess with it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the run of the mill pub franchise restaurants either, and I'm not a miser or tight. I just prefer honest food, and I don't mind paying out more if its in a nicer environment and cooked well, I just don't want to be ripped off, baffled or dazzled by what I see as snobbery.
So how about you forumites?
Fancy or not? Can i be persuaded to change my view?  |

I think somewhere inbetween. I like a nicely decorated place, not a replica of the 100 other places in the chain, a varied menu and a bloody good plate full. My local of 20 years is more of an eating place than a pub these days and the prices are steep for beer and food. But you do get loads and you can get a doggy bag so its usually good for two meals if not three sometimes. Jack. |

It depends. I like some fancy restaurants and the ambience and presentation of the food is part of what I like. I eat at a range of places, some very basic and others at the upper end of my affordability range.
Good food with people I like is good wherever it is though.

Exactly. A lot of places seem to charge for the 'ambience' and prestige of eating there. A lot of the time I think I can have a much better meal up the road for half the price. Also, sometimes I think I can actually do better than this myself lol. |

Down in the deep deep south in that London we went to Gordy Ramseys Heddon Street Kitchen, theatre ticket/meal deal thing. Place is quite nice, modern industrial in style for you interior designers. Staff are young, nice and friendly. Food was really very nice, though as you'd expect you dont get a right lot, portions of veg etc all come as extras. Two courses were paid for up front, so one , two (small) deserts and two (small) coffees still cost just under £30. Was fine, but wouldnt rush back. Gimmy a nice chinese! |

I've worked in fancy restaurants and given the choice I would pay the extra to eat in them as I'm a bit of a foodie ..
I like the whole experience of eating somewhere that's a bit posher than wetherspoons but I also don't mind eating at wetherspoons either..I'm a foodie but I'm no snob |

From someone who has worked in the catering industry for nearly 20 years.....take it from me OP the pretentious bullshit as you put it, continues to run strong.
I've seen a time where silver service was the experience diners sought and surely over the last few years as food (or rather the presentation of it) has the pretentiousness increase.
That, unfortunately is the way of things....chefs these days like to create a masterpiece on the plate almost as if the plate were a canvas and their food a work of art to be admired not merely eaten.
I, like dining out, I love the ambience, the sights and sounds and the professionalism of the staff of a good restaurant.....but when all is said and done.....that amounts to nothing if the food ain't worth shit! |

I don't need a massive plateful as I am a small eater so quality over quantity all day long. It's 2017 not 1990. We can have ingredients from all over the world, chefs and owners from all over, hell yeah I don't think they are fancy, just better! |

I choose to spend my money on the whole eating experience, and Michelin starred restaurants are likely to give me better value for money. There are pretentious chefs out there, but the 4 or 5 Michelin starred restaurants in Yorkshire are not (they wouldn't last 5 minutes if they were). I don't just pop in for a quick bite - I go for the whole afternoon.
But it isn't either/or for me. I'll still eat KFC, or Subway. Its time and place, and some fulfil what I am after at certain times better than others. However, after working in the catering trade in a previous life, I find the food could be awesome but if the service is shit, I won't go back. |

I've been to quite a few Michelin star restaurants, and the best ones aren't pretentious at all but have great service and put you right at ease so you can enjoy the eating experience.
When I go out for food I don't want massive plates that are gonna make you stuffed, and really love so the new and exciting flavor experiences.
Although, like _yrdwoman, doesn't stop me also enjoying fast food, although more a Burger King burger guy than KFC. |

I think for me, I don't mind eating in a fancy restaurant, and will happily pay the prices.
Providing:
It's honest
Not pretentious (in my opinion, I'm well aware others might not think so)
I'm getting what I paid for.
Simply (but nicely) presented.
Fills me up, so that I don't need to feel like paying a visit via a drive through fast food place on the way home.
It just baffles my brains how they get away with it. But then I must be in the minority in my thinking, as if I wasn't, they wouldn't get away with it
But as someone pointed out, the company makes all the difference, no matter where you are, or what shite is on your plate |

It's all relative isn't it. Sometimes you can pay a fortune for the nice surroundings and tiny portion or you could pay a reasonable amount for ok surrounding but really nice good honest food. Me and em prefer nice local restaurants where we know it's good and we won't have to pay a Kings ransom to eat there. |

Ive eaten at some Michelin awarded places and the food and service has been pretty mediocre at best.
Ive also eaten at some other non awarded establishments and the food and service has been way better.
I once asked the owner of a very good pub/restaurant near me (The Star at Sancton) Wyrdwoman will probably know it ? Why he didnt see if he can go Michelin?
He said he thinks its just pretentious bollocks and would rather his food and service speak for itself and doesn't feel the need to have these awards.
His place is top notch in my opinion

Generally I would agree with you, some chef "names" seem to have an air of "you are lucky for me to cook for you"! A somewhat known tv chef recently opened a bistro pub claiming it would be priced for "normal diners", he has a nearby internationally know restaurant, but a starter can be £15.  |

OP I am amazed that you and your partner have such a different experience and views of fine dining. I would love to hear where you set the bar re. what is pretentious and what is acceptable. Give us an example or two! |

Both are good
We've been to plenty of the well known fine dining restaurants such as the Ledbury and fat duck and although they are are amazing, it's something I could not do often as we spend hours eating and drinking. Most of these restaurants now have tasting menus and wine pairings and if the company / occasion is right then you can have a great night.
At the same time we are surrounded by independent restaurant styled pubs many of which have no nonsense grub, which has its own place.
I couldn't eat intricate master chef everyday and certainly couldn't eat beef and Guinness pies everyday too! |

Well, we have the same idea of fine dining, just Niki likes it, I don't
Niki loves Michelin restaurants, with fancy arty farty food, with silly names, which when served looks like it should be in an art gallery, and is the portion size for a toddler, whilst priced at a ridiculous amount.
Where my preferred placed would be a nice restaurant (not a chain type) where the food is named after exactly what it is.
Comes presented nicely, and will satisfy me.
Cost is of no consequence, as long as I feel it's value for money.
Simple and honest food that's not pretending to be something it isn't. |

I'm not sure where or how you arrived at that conclusion? I'm quite an accomplished cook, and do most of it at home.
Chinese, Italian, Jamaican, Indian as well as classic English dishes.
Mostly from fresh ingredients, but sometimes I cheat.

What's that got to do with eating out? The home experience is very different to going to a restaurant. Both have their place and aren't mutually exclusive.

My favourite place to eat in London is Hawksmoor. The steak's to die for and the cocktails are  It can be pricey, but even some of the best restaurants are not doing deals. I went to Treadwells, which is one of Marcus Wareing's restaurants and got a 3 course deal with a cocktail for £39.
For me though, even a really fancy restaurant can be bad if it doesn't have the right atmosphere. |

I cannot stand them.
I find them full of pretentious bullshit.
When I order a plate of food, I expect a plateful, i do not expect to have to ask for a microscope to find where they put the food on my plate, and be charged an extortionate amount for the privilege.
Don't throw a fancy name on fried potatoes and add an extra few quid on top because it has a fancy name.
Bollocks to your fancy sauces, your silly shapes, and remember it's a bloody plate, not an artist's canvas, it's still going to end up as the same stuff in the same place, so don't mess with it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the run of the mill pub franchise restaurants either, and I'm not a miser or tight. I just prefer honest food, and I don't mind paying out more if its in a nicer environment and cooked well, I just don't want to be ripped off, baffled or dazzled by what I see as snobbery.
So how about you forumites?
