Filled in copious amounts of application forms for a variety of jobs and still continuing to do so. Not really getting that many invites to interview but the ones I'm being invited too I'm still not successful. Another rejection today. Feel so deflated!

"Are you getting much feedback from the interviews?
"
In feedback from one company they advised they thought my application was fantastic and completed to the highest of standards. They suggested that I had left out tiny things in terms of the interview. They were saying how I was the ideal candidate blah blah but still didn't get the job lol |

Might require a relocation or travelling to another part of the country if the job market has been compressed in your area which sometimes is the only reason for not being given one. Businesses still discriminate based on health and circumstances even though they're not meant to, is there anything like that?
I wouldn't think too much about it, the right job comes up eventually, I'm sure you have the skills they look for, maybe the way you put the skills across to them. |

What type of role are you after? It's highly likely that there is a someone on Fab that works in a similar field that might be able to give you pointers or tips on how to stand out in the application/interview process.
Don't get too down. The rejections are simply part of the journey for you to find your ideal situation |

Any long gaps in employment?
It's good to answer all questions and if you're not sure at the time just say you need to think and ask to come back to that question. Show your skills but show you're flexible and willing to learn their methods too. |

Age can play a factor too.
Ive noticed it get slowly harder to get interviews from 40's onwards and the older you are the harder it gets.
Its a generation thing unfortunately.
Alot of employers are looking for the young vibrant and degree educated .
Crazy really but employers can afford to cherry pick in this economic environment.
Also alot of the people in HR recruitment team of businesses are young degree educated and so when it comes to advertising these vacancies and interviewing they prefer to look for similar young degree educated applicants.
I know my post is ageist but it from my own experience as a mid 40's guy and from that of others including the younger generation too. |

Well that good that you have those rather than not ?
But it also would depend what they are in and if they are still considered relevant and sought after by todays businesses?
Times move so quickly and what was considered a worthwhile degree for employers is now common place or out dated? |

I too am job hunting and getting nowhere.
To put things in perspective, I asked the Job Centre personnel recently if they had any figures on how many employers reply these days.
Their response was a study was conducted last year and it appears that only 0.7% of employers reply to candidate applications.
Since I started looking in early February, I've applied for over 100 jobs so far, and had 2 replies, got two interviews but owing to not meeting medical standards, had to withdraw my applications.
None of the other employers has replied in any shape or form.
I'm looking for work in at least 12 business fields across the UK, but still no luck. |

That's a tough break, couldn't you also say you were doing voluntary work or travelling during this time, just a white lie that'd be hard for them to check. People are dicks over employment gaps. If you don't want to do that you may have to take a drop in pay or try another job role. Sucks but it's back to square one and getting your foot in the door again. |

Maybe so, but also I have the transferable skills that come with having done both a masters and degree. Plus I've worked in many other fields alongside these and hold other qualifications too. Those are the areas I would most like to go into, however, I'm not isolating my job search to them exclusively

What gets me riled is that with many employers you end up doing the HR Dept's work for them. Yes, I accept there has to be an Online Application Form, but some take it to extremes!
Two major UK companies to which I applied recently had online forms to complete, one of which was 17 screen pages in length and the second was, wait for it..... 25 pages!
The only aspect they didn't ask for was my Inside Leg measurement |

It's soul destroying isn't it? When I was relocating down here, I applied for all sorts, sent out my cv etc. Very few people replied and only a couple of interviews. In fact, I got interviewed by a very large nursery chain who didn't even tell me I'd hadn't got the job! I complained to head office, I wasn't fussed by not getting the job but the fact that they hadn't had the decency to even let me know was rude. Head office weren't particularly helpful either.
I eventually got offered a zero hours job and once I moved I emailed to see if they had anything else, I managed to get 16 hours.
My problem was that I was applying for jobs that I was way over qualified for so no one wanted to pay me for my level or they weren't sure if I was going to go in and try and be in charge. So I've stuck with the 16 hours job and in a weeks time, I start a new full time job.
Keep your chin up, you will get there! |

Keep going and keep applying for the same jobs if you can...I'm waiting on a start date for a job I've applied for 3 times! Just kept waiting for vacancies to come up. It can get very disheartening applying and interviewing to be passed over and yet given great feedback every time! But keep doing it..Gotta be in it to win it! Best of luck. X |

Do as much research on the company that you are hoping to work for as you can....how they started, how they've grown, how they conduct their business etc.
Be as expansive as you can in the interview, be positive and upbeat, be engaging.
I know that you've probably done all these things but when I used to interview people, there was an awful lot who didn't even know the basics about the Company and just sat there "urming" with their answers.
Wish you all good luck. The workplace needs positive people like yourselves. |

I work on the format that 'Looking for a Work, becomes a Job!'
I do voluntary work as it's another way of networking and meeting people. I knew my IT skills outside of the bespoke systems I've used in some specific businesses, aren't up to date, so pushed the Job Centre people and they've got me onto an IT Assessment course next week from which I will get my skills losses updated to recognised standards.
Agencies are fine in some respect but up here all they seem to want is getting as many people on their books but do nothing to put them into work. |

"Filled in copious amounts of application forms for a variety of jobs and still continuing to do so. Not really getting that many invites to interview but the ones I'm being invited too I'm still not successful. Another rejection today. Feel so deflated!

Top tip OP, don't bother with application forms. If you want to work for a particular company go on their website and email HR directly with your cv and a covering letter
Thank you, to be fair hadn't even thought of that but it makes sense X "
That's how I got the job for 16 hours! Just bombard people with your cv, you just never know, it may land on the desk of the right person just at the right time. |

As an above poster, I treated looking for a job like a job and was sending off about 30-40 applications a day, on the books with two agencies... I kept a spreadsheet of where applied, if I got reply or even acknowledgement of receiving application... The job center guy just looked at me blankly when I showed it him when asked 'have you been looking for work'... That was the disheartening bit
Chin up lovely there will be something out there for you |

What kinds of job are they? What experience would they like, and what do you have?
They are a variety. School based work, re - engagement work, criminal justice work, administrative officer posts. I have experience in all fields as I've worked in all areas and got university / college qualifications in them
Any long gaps in employment?
It's good to answer all questions and if you're not sure at the time just say you need to think and ask to come back to that question. Show your skills but show you're flexible and willing to learn their methods too.
My last job ended in 2015 ( project closure) and I haven't been able to find anything since. Trust me, not for the lack of trying! "
The gap in employment will put some employers off initially. But, if you have made it through to interview, you need answer that part really well, be ready to give some positive answers to what you did in that year. If unemployment is high in your area, they will probably be more understanding of it. But sounding pro-active and giving examples of other things you did during that time will help. |
