Do you let your own rules get in the way of you living in the moment?

Not really. I like to focus my attention on whatever I'm doing or experiencing. However processing emotional stuff is probably the main thing that distracts me.

I don't have rules per se, more guidelines. If its illegal or dangerous then I won't be doing it, but otherwise I'll give it a go.

Illegal and dangerous sit above the rules as an overarching was of living. Then I have rules and then guidelines.

Can you give an example of what you'd call a rule and what you'd call a guideline?

Yeah, I would be interested. I mean, don't eat a scorching chilli on a first date is a given, but is it a rule?

Responsibilities, yes.

Aren't they just rules we chose rather than had imposed upon us?

A rule would be to not meet at someone's home until I have known them for some time. A guideline would be to not have sex on a first meet.

It is about those we choose. The imposition of rules is another layer but one that we can't (or have less) control.

Any context. I have an oddity about not getting up except on a 'proper' time (5 past is fine, 4 past isn't), for instance. I have worked hard to move this from being a rule to being a guideline. I hope it becomes an irrelevance at some point.

I don't think life is too short and living for a long time with the consequences of breaking a rule can be painful, in my experience.

My rules are mostly flexible.

Except the one about talking with your mouth full of food. I have a special wall for people who do that and come the revolution the streets will run red.

Depends obviously. I always take a 'risk assessment' when breaking rules. Life would be so boring if we all lived by the rule book. There wouldn't be many married swinging couples for starters.

I'm not talking about societal norms (rather than the law) as rules but your own rules.

Central

My important rules probably don't get broken ever but the rest are guidelines. Sure I miss out on some things but I also miss out on poor experiences - hence why I have some rules.
