I posted in the last thread as I was due mine. I went and got it done and I've just got a letter through yesterday saying they found abnormal cells, and now I'm getting myself worried googling things

Its REALLY common to have abnormal cells. Don't google it always tells you the worst! X

I'm trying to be up to date but they aren't making it easy.

Had smear and colposcopy done at the hospital 4 weeks ago, just received the letter to say there is something not right but due to technical issues they couldn't get a clear reading. Got an appointment for in 3 weeks time to have it done again and then will have to wait another month for the results.

They sure know how to keep you in a constant state of mild panic

yeah i've had them. had to go for a colposcopy to see if they could work out what it was and it really didn't hurt having that done.

turned out they couldn't figure out what was causing mine but i didn't have cancer. they recommended i had my coil taken out coz that's all they could put it down to, and i've been clear since so they were probably right.

That's what they want me to go for. I'm just confused because I got that letter plus a letter inviting me for a smear? Surely the letter for the colposcopy would be different from a usual smear one. I've been really busy today so took it out of my mind but now I keep thinking about it!

i would phone them and check they're sending you for the right thing.

but i found this on a website that was updated on the 2nd of this month (so is recent advice) and this might explain why they are not sending you for a colposcopy:

More than nine out of ten screening results are negative [1] and around one in 20 show low grade changes. For most women with low grade changes, the cells will go back to normal without treatment.

One in a 100 test results show moderate changes (dyskaryosis) and one in 200 show high grade dyskaryosis. If your results indicate that you have dyskaryosis, you will be sent for colposcopy to investigate it further.

It is extremely rare for cancer to be diagnosed from a cervical screening test. Less than one in 1,000 women's test results show invasive cancer.

it seems only high grade results mean further investigation in the form of a colposcopy and low grade means it could just be an infection and they are checking to see if it's cleared up. but still call them to check.

Never ever miss a smear test, had a smear, then a biopsy, that isnt right, now have to have an hysteroscopy. The biopsy wasnt as bad as i thought it would be,but a few minutes of discomfort can save your life.

Every 6 months, I've got a few markers that they're keeping an eye on so it doesn't develop into anything nasty. Was really ill about 5+ years ago and they thought my heart was failing at first but discovered my spleen was enlarged and I have proteins in my blood. So regular checks. Think they do really good keeping the checks up. X

If you've had any problems they may book you in early. If not you'll probably have to wait till September.

Ladies, if there's one thing you don't forget, make it getting a smear test. There are so so important and save lives. Cervical cancer is one of the most treatible if caught early enough.

Sadly in 2015, I lost my mum to cervical cancer,(diagnosed late stage 3), she was only 62 and it wasn't till after her death that we discovered she had missed her last smear test,(she was a very private person) this just shows how important they are.

I had mine a few weeks ago got the all clear, but it was a very emotional moment, as it made me think if my mum had just done it, she may still be here. It's such a simple test, a little discomfort maybe, but so important.

It bloody is pants! At least this time round I have the knowledge lol the last time I received both the doctors letter and the hospital letter on a bloody Saturday so spent the whole weekend bricking it, now I know it will be a 12 week wait and 'probably' not too much to worry about! I didn't have a mammogram until i was 52/53 at least. When i questioned it they said they send appointments out to all the women of the correct age in the same areas of the county at the same time and the cycle goes on over a 3 year cycle so i didn't get mine at age 50. I have a friend who is younger than me and she had hers done before me !

Hiding in the shadows

Mine is overdue, plus need my coil changing.

But my GP is no longer dealing with gynecology treatment.

I have to go to the sexual health clinic instead, walked in last week, walked straight out.

The waiting room is shared with the addiction clinic & was full of snack heads waiting for their daily methodone fix.

I'm currently trying to register with a new GP

You'll need to get your smear first before your coil change as it can affect the results. You don't get a real result as the cells have been messed with. In sure there's better wording than that but I hope you understand

Not long had my last smear which gave me the all clear, so no more now for 3 years so nope, never missed a smear and after that performance I never will.

"

glad you're OK now and fingers crossed for your future.

Good on you for not missing any.

Unfortunately if we miss or not the symptoms of cervical cancer can be put down to other things.

We should all understand the importance of a smear test.

Had a colposcopy yesterday. Keeping my fingers crossed the biopsies are all ok so I need no further treatment. The joys of being a woman the man who did it told me I have a beautiful cervix though

I'm guessing they send out a reminder letter so you know it's due still even if it's a year? Will you need a colposcopy again in a year or do you mean another smear first? I was told if the biopsies come back ok then I'll just need a yearly smear test.

I know we are rather rare on this site but just in case any other transmen come across this - if you still have yours please don't ignore it and keep your smears up to date! Especially if you are on testosterone as this ups the risk of cancer.

Yes it's embarrassing, I totally get that, but how much more stressful would it be if you didn't go and something bad was missed and picked up on later down the line, or never picked up on until it was too late to treat..?

It's still part of your body, look after yourself x

I've always had clear results until earlier this year.

Absolutely shit myself. Had a colposcopy at the beginning of August along with laser treatment.

Biopsy came back cancer free thank goodness. I need another smear in February.

These things are never pleasant but an absolute must. Can't understand any woman who doesn't get it done regularly.

My daughter has had her HPV vaccination but I'll still insist she gets her smear when she gets her invite. Even if I have to drag her there

Hiding in the shadows

Thank you John KinkyKat & Buxom Red for your replies.

Making an appointment has been the problem, I'm going to have to take time off work, which I will do.

Abd yes, smear first, then change.

It's just the fact my GP due to funding issues, has has to remove this service which I've had done there for the 20yrs I've lived here, that's made me cross.

I'm a grown mature woman who takes my health very seriously.

I'm not easily shocked or offended but walking into that clinic I hadn't been warned that mornings the waiting room would be like that, it was an awful sight, and no way was I sitting there, amongst those people.

What would a young, more naive person have done? Would they have left too, and possibly be too scared to ever go back, putting themselves at potential harm of not getting checked?

When I had mine, I mentioned to my GP about it being painful due to my slightly tilted cervix and being nervous so he prescribed me some mild tranquillisers to take before hand. Made it a lot easier because I wasn’t tense at all

That was the first painful smear I ever had, even though a biopsy was involved, I think they are just used to doing them, so it is an in and out job as quickly as possible so yes, I will mention that the last time it hurt me and hope they take the hint!

At 21 years old I was first diagnosed with cervical cancer, I was one of the very lucky ones who just needed an operation to remove the cells. 6 months later it was back! Another operation which worked that time . I had yearly smears for 14 years before I was finally allowed to say I was cancer free. Next week I will have another smear (only every 3 years now....yipeee!!!). Please always make sure you have your smear it's a 5 minute procedure that saves lives.

Love to all those struggling with this now xx

Sounds like the nurse at my doctors she has made me bleed twice. Then she moves the speculum around she should be retrained.

Just want to add, what amazing brilliant service at that clinic.

The head nurse, is brilliant, male & very gay, very opened minded when discussing my 'sex life' and great advice given.

He also me in hysterics, when went back for coil swap, turned out I had a fibroid that had attached to my coil, had to be lazared to remove it.

After years of a stuffy old nurse at my GPs, feeling quite embarrassed to talk about certain things, definitely a huge change.

Quite looking forward to my next check up & tea n biscuits with my new friend

Just to add !

The clinic that I go to is amazing too

its so easy to openly talk about the swinging lifestyle and to not be judged the Nurse was actually quite intrigued!

I went back several times as I was worried about symptoms that I had after sex and the nurse was like

“‘what you getting your knickers in a twist for! All results were clear “

But me being paranoid ask for a referral as I felt something wasn’t right ...........

I’m now booked in for several test in the next 2 weeks and a biopsy !

So fingers crossed it’s nothing to worry about

A world of my own

I finally got mine. Wasn't too painful. Despite my coil also being overdue to come out it's apparently "looking beautiful" who knew that was even possible.

I'm currently in the drs a lot at the moment due to other health concerns and being monitored very closely. It makes you realise how lucky we are to have our NHS.

To everyone going through things, sending positively and love xx

"Had my results in Wednesday - CIN3 which is highest level pre-cancerous cells. They cut & lasered it all away though so back to 6 monthly smears.

For anyone who hasn't - please ensure your's is up to date!!

Really sorry to hear this and hope everything has been caught!

I was lucky as I was caught at CIN1, hopefully it will be the same on Tuesday as this is now 2 years later, so I hope it hasn't progressed any, just shows these simple procedures are vital

I hope yesterday was ok & not too uncomfortable?

I've been here before so hoping it'll help with my case for a hysterectomy xx

"

Have they bloody stopped lubing the speculum thing? Now that was bloody sore

It's actually 3 years (where does the time go) since I was there last, so yes another biopsy and a 4-6 week wait for the result.

The doctor did ask, even if it was minor would I still like to be treated, so I said yes, if that was her view.

Their fear is that having women go for their smear every six months gets very tiring and quite a few women stop going as they get fed up.

So hopefully this will put an end to every 6 months fingers crossed

Having to go so often does put a lot of women off and a bad experience can cause a phobia.

I had my first abnormal smear at 18 and was treated for abnormal cells at 19. I was then put in a 6 month recall for smear tests at the colposcopy clinic. I went for my first one and the bad experience I had with the both doctor who did my treatment and the nurse who did that smear caused severe anxiety around having them done. Every time I rang up to book a smear after that I would hang up having a panic attack.

Fast forward nearly 15 years and my ex husband and I were seeking help from our gp for fertility issues. That gp refused to refer us until I had a smear test done. She needed to give me a mild sedative to do it and was extremely gentle. My results came back as stage one cancer. That gp saved my life with her insistence.

Even now, 10 years on from my cancer diagnosis, I have anxiety issues with having a smear test done. I’m now all clear and have gone from yearly to 3 year checks. When it’s due my gp still has to give me a mild sedative and hubby comes with me and holds my hand throughout

I'm sorry you had such a distressing experience!! I couldn't believe how quick & painless my last smear was. Even the biopsy & loop diathermy were relatively painless - the after cramps were horrific though. I hope the procedure becomes less for traumatic for you going forward xx. B xx

Why not ask the GP for a diazepam to help you relax to get it done? My daughter had them for dental treatment.

It’s not pleasant having internals. I’ll be having a few as I have mesh to get removed.

Good luck with future smears.

"I've had my reminder through. Ladies, are you up to date??? "

Be three years late in April.

Due to have one,was pregnant, then wouldn't do it at 6 week check, booked in again, waited for 45 mins, couldn't wait any longer, had to leave, went to clap clinic to get a coil, but they wouldn't do it at same time.

Just been a bloody nightmare to sort.

Colposcopy appointment in January, was there 6 months ago. Had a hysterectomy at 34. Had cells removed in 2009 after a 3 year watch and was on annual smears but last January it came back with high grade abnormalities but the unit is very good that I am attending so pretty relaxed about it.

Smears are so important, get them done regularly. They are not that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Abnormal cells & laser treatment to remove them in 2001 was enough to convince me to keep on top of it! Appointment booked for Thursday & coil also due to be changed; but same story as Phoenix in that the GP no longer does it.

Sexual Health clinic for me ... new coil & will get tested while I’m there!!

Great thread ladies - so important to do & lovely to see the support (& a nice change from the argumentative threads too!! )

I'm up to date. Had an abnormal result previously, when I was 22 and pre cancerous cells were discovered, that needed to be removed via a colposcopy. I've had to have a smear every year ever since and luckily they've all come back clear, over the years. It's very important to keep up to date with smears

Hi ladies

While we’re talking gynae issues please don’t let them use mesh, tape, TVT, sling, in younto repair prolapse or incontinence issues. Please research it if you do need it or have it already.

Feel free to PM me to ask anything. I’m about to have an op to have mesh removed.
