Instant std tests

hiding from cock pics.

On an episode of "Being Mary Jane", before she had sex with a new person they together did a home DIY test and waited for the results. I know obviously the most stds have an incubation period of a couple of weeks so wouldn't show, but I have never heard of anybody doing in instant test, before having sex. Was this something just for the actual program, and they had used poetic licence?

Or is this a thing?

Its something that I would do especially if considering bareback sex in a new relationship

Would think its a sensible idea personally

I know when I was tested by THT at VA the HIV test gave an instantaneous result but was only accurate as of three months previous (due to the potential incubation period) so not exactly a good indication if you've had unprotected sex in the three months before the test.

Not aware of any other instantaneous test results though without having a full lab in hand to run them in - which might kind of kill the moment!!

I was also tested by them at the va, and yes instant hiv result, but in BMJ they tested for all different things including mouth swabs.

I also was tested by the Terrance Higgins Trust with instant hiv results.

I would be dubious as obviously certain diseases having an incubation period.

It's not something I am considering using for me.

I just thought it was interesting that possibly people could actually do this, as I really had no idea it was available. It is an American program so things may be different. I was just surprised by it.

As far as im aware any instant testing not just for stds but for all infections have quite a high false positives, something to do with better safe than sorry sort of thinking

I've heard of test results being available the same day.

I don't see how incubation periods would affect it though. They swab you today and get the results from today's swab. Doesn't incubation period mean that the std needs to grow/ reproduce in your body for x time and then they take a new swab after x time? (Hope that makes sense.)

They have to let the virus or bacteria grow to a certain stage of its life cycle so they can see certain parts that prove it is conclusively that individual

That's what I thought... so how can they get the result in one day?

Maybe theres enough to get a reading straight away?

But longer to see symptoms ?

There will be enough of the active part to signal a positive result but a lot of these infectious bugs have similar active parts so quite a lot will show a positive even if its not actually the one you are looking for.

I remember being taught all this sort of stuff in uni, its why some people will give a false positive on a drugs swab at an airport and stuff because they have similar compounds like codeine or morphine is the same group as heroin

Central

They sell test kits in the USA that give you results within a few minutes using urine and blood.

They're all going to have accuracy issues, including false negatives and positives. And different infections have latency periods during which it can't be detected, as others state. Using a kit would give some people more confidence than if they'd not used it but I'm guessing that most would use them alone.
