Don't wish to go into arguments of what he did.
However, he is a decent and courageous man who was fighting in a hostile and dangerous environment.
He could be freed next week. Hooray!!!! |

actually.... not cleared.... he still killed someone who should not have done...
it has been downgraded from mudrer to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.....
for all the evidence they produced (the death of his father, the fact it has been said his higher ups should have noticed his state so he should not have been on duty ect) has rightly been taken into consideration to his mental wellbeing when it wasn't during his court martial...
that fact is he still killed someone though...
so yes... the change in verdict is a vindication that he could never have been charged with murder.... but seeing the people outside the court cheering, shouting hip hip hooray and the speech given by frederick forsythe and the lawyer doesn't sit well....
the wife was the only one who i think struck the right tone..... happy the verdict had been changed whilst acknowledging that he had done something wrong....
if that means he has now served his time plus good behaviour.... then so be it... |

I'm glad he's getting released.
It's ridiculous that they send anyone into that environment and expect them to never ever lose their temper or make a mistake.
After spending a fortune fostering an aggressive spirit etc.
I appreciate it's not open war, and they are trying to use criminal style justice and ruling. But the Taliban casualty he finished off wouldn't have had any rights under the Geneva convention anyway.
Just saying |

Glad it's been downgraded to Manslaughter on diminished responsibility.
He might have done something 'wrong'. But if anyone one here has been in a situation where everyday they can see their friends killed or blown to pieces, be under constant risk of death, injury or capture and torture if caught.
Those people can pass judgement on him snapping and doing the wrong thing.
Those who have not, can go back to idling time on the internet and be happy that other people are thrown into situations we cannot dream of.
He may be released in days as the sentence for manslaughter would have been less than what he has currently served. |

I thought he was cleared of murder but will be convicted, at a later date, of manslaughter? |

Correct, but he's served 3 years already, I think. The sentence for manslaughter could be less than 3 years, in which case he would be released. |

Only if you agree with the US reinterpreting the Geneva Convention to suit their own ends by denying Taliban combatants POW status and defining them as 'unlawful combatants'. This despite the fact that even then they'd have been liable for protection under the Geneva Convention anyway. |

Although our armed forces deserve all the help and support we can give, there are always 2 sides, the person he shot could have been forced to fight, diminished responsibility or mental health issues,we dont know because he is dead,he was a soldier not a judge and jury,he has served his time now for killing someone,no one can expect to walk away without any consequences after killing someone in cold blood |
