Everyone goes in to a marathon saying 'I just want to finish' while secretly hoping for a certain time.
Plan A is that certain time and Plan B is what you fall back on if it looks like Plan A won't work.
Could be as simple as 'get the medal' or could be a reworked time that you'd settle for.
When I did London I hoped for 5 hours and it went to pot in the middle. I didn't have a Plan B so it quickly became 'just get to the end' |

I'll be there at one of the cheering points for the charity my girlfriend ran it for last year, we'll be in full on cheerleading mode and enjoying the day as we know a fair few people running it |

You can still do some training in the USA - I haven't looked, but I wonder if park run exists in the states?
Hope you're training goes well, and you achieve your goals. Don't forget to smile for cameras!
I didn't get in the marathon - tried with ballot but unsuccessful.
I'm doing some royal marine commando events to test myself though, |

Swing King, is right - you need a plan A
& plan B just in case.
When I'm hanging on any run, I pick a "target" usually a fellow runner ahead of me, and I just focus on that, to run them down by the finish!

That is a good one that I use at half marathons. When I get to mile 9 I 'go hunting' and chase down the people in front of me. Worked well so far |

I have looked and there is one not far from where I'm staying I think. Also I've convinced the nephew to do a colour run with me while I'm out there lol
But worried about running on my own as I might get eaten by an alligator..... But at least he'll have a good meal, won't have to eat for the rest of the year haha |

It's only crocs that run fast in a straight line
although to be fair, if you did find some alligators, think of it like interval training, with an edge. |

Mr Totty did it last year, and he certainly didnt train properly for it did manage to get upto 18 miles in training, but didnt run last month what soever as had a slight twinge on thigh so took it easy, initially he was happy just to compete, and was happy to finish and get a medal, then after he managed 18 miles in 3 hours he thought a 5 hour time would be something to aim at, , he finished in 5.25 .. had to walk last 8 miles as calfs literally seized up.. The crowd will definately spur you on , you will love it, when tired just walk, at a leisurely pace..most important thing is you enjoy yourself..and good luck x |

You'll feel so great when you've done it. One of my friends ran the Brighton Marathon last weekend. She did really well.
Hope the final tapering off is going ok. |

"Emergency ipod..... Do veteran marathoners think I should pack one? Im thinking there might be times where I need to zone out and be in my own space to push me on? "
If it goes well then know you won't need it although some stretches it may help as it's not all great sights.
If it goes bad (which obviously it won't!) then the ability to zone out may come in useful |

I'd say leave the ipod. The crowds are great all the way round. I'm now kinda looking forward to it now. Also agree with the Plan A and Plan B. For me this year Plan A will hopefully be a sub 4 hr and Plan B is just quicker than last year 4.24. |

Yep, leave the iPod at home. The crowds are awesome, deafening in places, soak up the atmosphere, it will get you round.
Plan B for me this year is to be the fastest VLM runner of a certain fancy dress (can't give many details here).
Plan A is not to die attempting plan B!
I will be starting from the fast good for age area between red and blue.
We will both be at the expo Saturday afternoon. |

I love the occasional speedy fancy dress runners that you see up there with the fast guys |

We told the charity my girlfriend ran for last year that we'd go to one of their cheering points. Seems they took that as we'll set one up! Received a banner, balloons and multiple tee shirts in the post. So we'll be in full on cheering mode somewhere around the Isle of Dogs |

I'd rather not say on a swinging site in case some parasitic journalist spots the possibility of 'outrage' |

"Slightly panicking as my charity vest isn't here yet!
You'll have to go topless then....!
i dont think London is ready for that!!"
Have you been to London lately....!
You wait around long enough and you'll see pretty much anything and everything....
Besides, you get more people cheering you on |

"Slightly panicking as my charity vest isn't here yet!
If your charity are at the expo just pick one up when you get your number "
I chose to run for a local charity, not a big national one. I bought my own vests as sizing can be difficult for a runner like me then sent them to the charity so they could get them printed.
I sent them off at the beginning of March! |

I'm off to the expo today. My vests haven't arrived with the charity (they are a small charity back home do won't be at the expo)
Hoping my dad will be able to pick them up today so I can get them from him tomorrow. All hassle I don't really need! |

Yes....the expo is brill but a faff to get there and a cause of additional stress, felt much better after I'd been though, but soon replaced with panic again.....think once I'm there on Sunday and last 'runners poo' done I'll be better...! |

My advice if there no one with you at the start take a old top to throw away it's cold waiting 10 mins before start book 3 days off work a least after and keep moving when you finish don't just sit down and cease up don't stress anyone is in the same position good luck and collect your medal |

Done and dusted.
Been there, done it, had an absolute 'mare (cramp in both legs from mile 14), didn't enjoy it tbh, won't ever do one again....
Well done to Evie and everyone who ran it though, this has been a nice post to be involved. |
