But as with anything you can say the same words so many ways, angry, sexy or patronising etc. And then the way one person says might be heard many different ways by the receiver, in this thread it ranges from funny to patronising. I think when you don't know someone you can take offence where none was intended.

You are right, one has to choose ones audience when it comes to certain words, humour and terms of endearment. I don't believe John was intending to be patronising to women in his opening post. That was his sense of humour, which thankfully chimes with mine. However what is humourous or endearing to one person may be highly offensive or very irritating to another. I find it's best to avoid people who's sense of humour I don't like, and leave them to those who do appreciate them. We are all different. Also as someone who has much dealings with senior citizens as part of my job, I often in a jocular manner address some old men as 'Young Man'. I guess I could be accused of being patronising or unprofessional. But it will be a sad life for me if all words used in jocular fashion are outruled because some people take offence. |

Will we have to start refering to each others as "manfriends" and "womanfriends" now?
Do people not really see the reason people use girl isnt infsntalising its just that woman/women really doesnt flow or fit in most conversation.
Where as men is short and works because of that.
I think in the English language 'girl' probably has 2 meanings. It can mean 'little girl', but it has evolved to be a colloquial term for a woman.The Spanish language distinguishes better 'nina' only ever means little girl, but 'chica' might be used in the same colloquial way we use the word 'girl' when really meaning a woman. If it does infantilise them I find that quite flattering - anything that makes me feel younger is good! The word 'lady' has also evolved in the English language. It used to be a term referring to a woman of aristocracy. It's now a politer or more respectful way of saying 'woman'. The word 'woman' is purely factual which is a bit boring. Well that's that's my interpretation of the meanings of these words, but I'm sure some will disagree.
One of my FBs refers to me as "Baby boy", which pisses me off so much that it makes me want to ram my cock down her throat!

But you had to add 'little' infront of girl for people to know what you meant.
