Hi! Nice to meet you, I'm socially awkward!
Does anyone have this trait? Being a lovely genuine person who isn't the best under pressure in a social environment? Can have you in stitches but can't always deliver the punchline in the correct wording? Can pay you a compliment that might come out as garbled nonsense? Once comfortable in their environment can be a totally different person to the first impression you once had of them?
Just me?

No its not just you. I'm a complete social wreck and if I have you in stitches it's probably because I've done something stupidly clumsy. And garbling is my natural state |

Does it count if like me you hold back a little when first meeting people. I do have a slightly twisted sense of humour, so I like people to know me a bit first so that they know when I'm joking.
Not the sort of person who goes out of my way to offend or upset people. |

Jealous. I stay away from the centre of attention people, loud mouths etc. |

There and to the left a bit |
I'm usually very introverted and awkward when I don't know people I'm socialising with, often thinking of the right thing to say when it's far too late or bumbling awkwardly grasping for words.
Once I'm comfortable though I'm usually quite the opposite and blather away like an idiot!! |

Based on previous threads there are a few of us here which is amusing on one hand.
And it's not like I'm going to walk into a group social full of forumites in less than a week or anything |

Hi my name is Tequila and I'm socially awkward *waves*
I'm a nightmare before (and probably during) social events where I don't know what to expect, I turn into a petulant brat but I can't help it and can often come across as a bit of a snooty bitch if I don't want to engage in conversation. |

it depends, if it's strangers and i don't know them i'm fine, i can chat to whoever and with work i'm bloody great at crowd control and getting big groups of folk to listen to me and do as i ned them to do...give me a soap box and i'm happy enough.
in fab play situations, i'm pretty happy to get out of my clothes and jump in with everyone else
however, if i know folk or relatives come round for example and i'm not in the mood i can be terribly awkward, i get so weirded out and uncomfortable. it's odd, i'd have thought it'd be the other way round, go figure |

This
I'm quite shy at times but I work in customer service, and when I'm comfortable in my work environment I'm as confident and chatty as anything. |

work seems to draw a slightly different side out of me, i'm very confident in my work i guess as i've been doing it for years and i just sort of quietly know i'm very capable. odd how a 'work head' can differ from our day to day selves |

Im shy. Sometimes I avoid social gatherings and stay home in my own little bubble of safety and unawkwardness. My friends push me and I love them for that, im not a loner per se but I do spend a fair bit of time on my own. |

Kinda. Just remembering how to walk, breathe, negotiate doors, do this life thing...is all a bit of a dorky, klutzy calamity in this body and mind. Hey ho, managed 40years thus far.
Hi fellow social awkwardites. Shall we wave/hug/bump head kiss/drop bag/all speak at the same time? |

"Guess it's not just me!
Who finds they're more confident online then they are in person? Or do people generally think they're the same with both?"
I don't think I am socially awkward. However, I am probably more confident online than I am in person. I will say a lot when messaging someone that I won't say face to face. |

It's not so much a case of being more confident - more that on-line you have that breathing space to think things through and formulate a response that you don't off-line...if that makes sense? |

I agree. Theres that vast space between you and they can't look at your face as you stumble over words and blush like a beetroot! |

I've never been socially awkward, I know I can chat about anything, to anyone. I get super nervous beforehand though. Anxious, sweat moustache, panicky. Once in there though, I'm good! |

This is true! I can be fairly articulate in a text/digital response. In person I end up with 5 umm's 3 ah's and a lot of quiet time |

Sorry I wasn't there to help you up again.
Even after two years on the club scene, making many new friends, I still find starting a conversation at the bar with someone new incredibly unnerving. Can take me an age to pluck up the courage to just say "Hi, you new here?". |

There is a recognised Syndrome named S.A.D. (Social Anxiety Disorder). I had this years ago; it's complex and lengthy to explain but whilst I'm competent in Public Speaking especially in Sales and Marketing, there are times when in my off duty time, I revert back to what used to be!
Usually, most other people don't understand the condition or can't accept it occurs. Those affected often suffer in silence. |

Very true. And not to be confused with the SAD that is Seasonal Affective Disorder. |

I meant to add it blights your life. E.G., within work scenarios, especially training courses involving person to person interaction or role play situations; I've become very uncomfortable to the point of running out, & subsequently being marked down, meaning drops in status, salary etc.
Social events, parties within work circles became hell on earth. Invariably, I'd cover colleagues so they could go and enjoy themselves instead.
I get by these days far better than I used to, but there are times when I don't. |

Yep, add me to this list of awkwardians. Hate that 'omg, cant think of anything to talk about so i'll just spout the first thing that comes into me head' moment.
Also the 'waiting for someone on your own in the pub'. Always makes me feel weird. I always like to be late now which probably wont go down to well on here |

Does anyone else make sure they are busy "working" on their phone so they have a genuine reason for not interacting without seeming like an awkward doofus? I can't be without my phone if I know I have to wait for someone or am expected to converse with strangers |

I don't even need a phone. I can quite comfortably ignore the only other person in a waiting room. That said, I don't always feel the need to, which is confusing. |
