"Own up to it"??? From what I can tell, claiming to be a nerd or a geek has become the "cool" thing in recent years. It's more of a humblegbrag now than anything else...

Depends on the geekery I think. I'm old-school geek; socially awkward, find talking to computers easier than talking to people, like the logic and narrative order to fictional places.

Modern geekery can be as simple as wearing an ironic t-shirt and liking a couple of Marvel films.

Oh no... I'm a hipster geek.

Back before it seemed to be the cool thing, I used to call myself an undercover geek. I used to live in the comic shop and watch genre film and TV but I wasn't really nerdy and had an ok social life.

Both, though TNG really took a great idea and ran with it. May be Picard's finest moment!

Loving some of the responses on here, especially the Warhammer and Star Trek mentions!

Trek lovers, have any of you seen the short film Prelude to Axanar on YouTube? Better than the JJ Reboot films in my opinion, and hopefully a full length film in progress now some legal issues have been sorted.

Not played any Warhammer for ages, used to love Bloodbowl, had a Blood Drinkers space marine army and even played Adeptus Titanicus...

Also a big real life space exploration and Physics geek

Massively into comics (it is an addiction 10 years ago it was easier to list what Marvel books I wasn't ordering, weaning myself now); loads of sci-fi; comedy geek also; etc.

I enjoy gaming but life get in the way so don't do it regularly.

I'm not sure what it means to be a geek anymore, i think everyone is a geek.

Marvel movies are the most popular movies out there and I'd consider the incredible passion that people have for sport to be fucking nerdy.

Self proclaimed geeks tend to be the most elitist, entitled and stubborn people that I've ever encountered.

It was much less confusing when someone would shout nerd at you while you pretended to play with lightsaber in the playground.

"Self proclaimed geeks tend to be the most elitist, entitled and stubborn people that I've ever encountered."

Surely that is the risk with any self-selected group identifier. You will always get those "a /true/ fan" type people wishing to exclude rather than include others.

I have a straight freind who does live action rollplay and fencing with a big long sword, he got some armour and stuff he'd ordered arrive and asked me to help him get it on.

It was so unfair.

Played wow for years until raiding turned into a 2nd job so had to quit playing.

Love fantasy/comic book films. Keep your poxy 50 shades, just give me wolverine

My friend pointed out that football isn't considered geeky, yet when you have a football fan who actively memorises all the statistics for a team, how is that not geeky?

Anything can be geeky
